(hip dysplasia) he was the best dog in the kennels there. he was a drug dog and was one of the 1st dogs to take part in operation "counterpush" in usafe. he was so good he had a $10,000 price on his head! (if it sounds like i'm bragging just a little, wellllll, i am. i worked simba for about four years till his hips went bad. everyone hated when i went on leave because myself and nauman, (our german kennel

comments - i donated my dog, murphy, to the military in january 1968. he
served in the vietnam war for years. his number was 6m77. in 1969-70, his handler was gary goelzhauser of the 47th infantry platoon of scout dogs, 101st airborne division. i know he served in phu bai, south vietnam, for a period of time. gary traced murphy back to me in 1970 and we corresponded until he came home and then we lost track of each other. i still keep pictures of murphy that he sent me hanging on my walls. i love dogs and have never forgotten murphy. i raised him from a pup until he was 2 years old, when he went into the military. i have to admit i was being forced to give him up and i thought he would be a wonderful dog for the military - loyal to death, loving to those who loved him, and the smartest dog i ever owned. if anyone out there remembers murphy or knows gary goelzhauser, please contact me at darnelllinda@comcast.net. thank you

comments - dennis, i just read your story about "your" buck that was posted on war-dogs.com web site. it was extremely touching and brought back a lot of memories. i too handled a "buck" z016 but several years (and worlds) apart. i handled my buck in 1983 -84 at miesau germany and later pcs'ed to ft.
gordon ga. where he was later put down (with out fan faire).

like your buck mine saved my life too. while on patrol during peace @ miesau time my buck picked up an alert. i called for assistance from another dog team, mark ecard with bobo came to assist. when the intruders were spotted i ordered a "halt" they turned and fired with automatic weapons (something that should not of happened during peace time). i released buck he responded appropriately and i returned fire. ecard and bobo responded in kind. when all was said and done three men were dead and i and buck, mark and bobo were alive.

if it were not for my buck i would not be alive to tell the story of how remarkable the military dogs are. after my ets i was hired as a police officer on the augusta ga. police dept. as a dog handler. i have long since moved on and am no longer in police work but i still am a devoted dog handler and owner and still think fondly of my experiences as a k- 9 handler.

sorry for babbling what i really wanted to say is thank you and "your" buck for the sacrifice, i thank god you did what had to be done!!!

with all my devotion to the k-9 corp.

comments - monty and i were stationed at mcas cherry point during the start of oif i. we were assigned as a garrison unit at the time. little did we know, that the field mwd handlers would call on us to help them. the field units were spread thin at the time due to the war in afghanistan and iraq. monty and i got our calling to go to iraq in april of 2004. my snco needed three bodies to go. he was willing to send who ever wanted to go, but he called on myself and monty to be the first. we were motivated to accept the mission and left to iraq on may 2004. insurgents tried to hit us all the time, but we managed to make it everyday. although everyday was a close call. many of the troops were a little more at ease when we went out on missions with them. they knew that monty and i would lead the way to protect them from entering an ied area. not only were we their protectors, but also commrads. i would take monty with me every where i went when we were back at camp. having him around lifted everyones spirit. but no matter how hard they tried, they would never get the best of us. we would stay in country until november 2004. in the seven months we were in country, there were never any severely wounded or casualties on the missions that we would go out on. the insurgents knew better!

if there is a way to stop the dogs being left behind (if they still are) it must be stopped...these animals are far to valuable to be left behind...what happened to "no soldier left behind?" i ask the gov't.

i also had the opportunity to teach at the k-9 center at lackland afb. i encountered many things throughout my career, but nothing prepared me for what was about ot happen. i had completed my tour in the military and was working for a civilian k-9 company. i had told them that if they were to pick up a contract overseas that i was the first to go...little did i know that i was one of the first k-9 teams to be sent to iraq. i was sent over on an army contract attched to the 1armored divisions' provost marshall in baghdad. i was "loaned" out to many units such as the 82nd airborne, 5th group special forces, and many more. i was to do raids on palaces and houses, riot control, extractions, improvised explosive device (ied) sweeps, traffic control points(tcp) vehcile searches and more and through it all my one true savior and friend was my dog...he didn't think of the consiquences or the reprocussions he just wagged his tail and went about his duties...i am alive today and so are many more to our four legged friends, "guardians of the night" thank you for recognizing one of the militaries greatest heros...

comments - my uncle donnie was a marine and did 3 tours in vietnam. my
uncle and i have had german shepherd dogs all our lives and when i watched you're documentation on the war dogs it ripped my heart out. my other uncle who served in wwii in the air force was lucky enough to bring his faithful companion home with him only to spend endless hours entertaining us as children. i'm very proud of my uncle donnie whom passed away 2yrs ago from a rare form of cancer which the government actually documented as being a complication from agent orange. the day my uncle passed away i was sleeping in the whelping box waiting for my female shepherd to give birth. i woke up crying with my heart sinking and knew it was time for my uncle to let go. i called his house moments before he passed away and had my aunt give him a big kiss for me and let him know the babies were coming. one of the pups were going to be for my uncle and i let my aunt know to tell him i would be honored if his soul would creep into any of the babies. the 1st born was a male that was breech, bag already off of him and had an attitude just like my uncle. i named him adontus in honor of him. i'm glad that this country is finally giving the vietman veterans and the k9 heros the recognition everyone deserves.

comments - my heart goes out to each and every one of you that served in
this capacity and others.. i should note that while often forgotten by many, the handler and his dog have a proud memorial display in the us army infantry museum located at ft. benning, georgia. as you can see by my dates of service (1/2 active-1/2 reserve), i am not a vietnam vet...but it was the vietnam vet that made me what i am and helped mold my career. i can relate to the bitterness felt by many, as i was activated from the irr for desert storm and came back home alone and unknown to the many other people that were waving flags etc. i am a 100% service-connected vet from my service in germany in the early 80's. it was seeing the determination in the faces of the many nco's that had rcvd thier "baptism of fire" as young men in vietnam, that kept me focused when times were tough. i owe a great deal to you. thank you for doing what was asked, thank you for serving, and welcome
home!! i currently belong to a number of veterans groups, one of which is
rolling thunder? inc., wisconsin chapter 3 (green bay, wis.) where i serve as the sgt at arms. i encourage anyone that is interested in pow/mia issues or simply helping vets, to join our organization and get involved. the

real life war hero. he served in south vietnam from august 1967 until his death in 1969. he died from a disease known as tropical canine pancytopenia
(tcp) also known as "nosebleed". until he died, king and i ate, slept, worked and lived together during four months in training at fort benning, georgia and for a year and one half in south vietnam. king was trained to detect mines, trip wires, punji pits, enemy presence and caches of munitions and supplies. he disliked monkeys for some reason and he would attack them at every oportunity. usually when we were being airlifted by "eagle flights", king would attack the helicopter we were trying to get into. i extended my tour of duty in vietnam for six months (for a free thirty day
leave) and i came back to the 'states' to contact the president of the united states (president johnson), congress and many supportive organizations trying to make it possible for king to come home to the "states". before any positive action was completed, king was stricken with tcp and he died. he was one of the best friends a person could ever have.

my dog king
written by seminole jack

down in the jungles of south vietman
fighting for freedom
there is a scout dog walkin' by my side
to show me where ol' charlie hides

can't tell how many times ol' king has saved my life he's been with me through the stormy strife i'd like to keep him and take him home with me but uncle sam said this can never be

oh give me my dog
let me take him home
can't you see that he loves me
don't make me leave him all alone
oh let me take my scout dog home

not long to go in this dirty old war
my bones are weak and my body is sore
my dog king feels just about the same
i hate to leave him i can't stand the pain

oh give me my dog
let me take him home
can't you see that he loves me
don't make me leave him all alone
oh let me take my scout dog home
please let me take my scout dog home.

comments - u.s. 'war dogs'
as a dog owner and enthusiast, i would like to dedicate this labor day weekend to our hard-working military dogs and their handlers overseas who are working day and night to help protect americans and the freedoms we enjoy. we often forget or are simply unaware that military dogs protect our nation and our way of life -- even over three-day weekends and on holidays.
dogs have been used for security and early warning signals long before they were universally loved as pets. throughout the history of warfare, brave canines have served in battle as sentries, warriors and even mascots.
they have also been used to track enemies, patrol tunnels and to send long-distance messages. today, u.s. military working dogs, also known as a "war dog" or "k-9," are used overseas to detect mines and to secure the perimeters of military installations.
on july 4, happy tails dog spa in vienna, va., began a campaign to create awareness and generate support for these hard-working dogs and their handlers. we had modest hopes of raising $1,000 through a fund-raising event and some publicity. but many, many caring individuals rallied behind us, greatly exceeding our initial expectations. (for information or to support our efforts, call 703-821-1777.)
because of tremendous national support, happy tails dog spa has raised more than $14,000 and has sent approximately 1,500 pounds of supplies to iraq and afghanistan. we will now be able to fully support our eight "adopted" military units with cooling pads, protective eyewear and heat-resistant clothing.
our efforts will not conclude on labor day as planned. because the campaign has been so popular and successful, happy tails dog spa? has decided to create a permanent non-profit arm to our company, known as k-9 support inc., to support working dogs of all kinds. from military dogs to rescue dogs to seeing-eye dogs, we are committed to aiding these wonderful animals in any way we can.
on behalf of happy tails dog spa and all the dogs and troops supported by our campaign, i want to thank everyone who has been a champion of this worthwhile cause. your contributions and concern for these dogs have positively impacted their lives and the lives of their handlers. i encourage everyone to keep these military dogs in their thoughts this labor day and to support them in any small way you can.

comments - joined the af in 1968 was sent to security police tech school,
volunteered for k-9 school. i was trained by lrt (sentry dog) to be a good handler. i was sent right from tech school to nhatrang afb vietnam...thats where i met my best friend, confidant, and protector stoltz. we worked and played at nhatrang till it closed and we were sent to the 35thsps,k-9 phanrang afb, where we mingled in with new friends and brothers in arms. in jan 1970 i had orders back to the us and had to say good bye to my little brother, as stoltz was now to me a family member that protected me for a year, letting me go home safely. the rules at the time did not allow for us to bring our companions home, and that was the saddest day of my life, i cried, got drunk, cried some more, drank some more, went to his kennel and sat and cried for 2 hours. i, to this day can see his big, all seeing brown eyes looking up at me and telling me "it will pass". he was wrong, i wont let it pass..... i loved that guy, like no other person place or thing, he was my 4 legged guardian angel. i have many pictures of him and his pals to remind me of how he turned me from a boy to a man in a far off scary place.
i look at his picture often, and my heart aches. i wonder as i stare "what happened to my best friend". i call my 3 little westies and show them the photo and tell them "see there's a real hero" and wipe my eyes once more>

combat operations during my tour-of-duty with these wonderful dogs. i can't thank the handlers and dogs i worked with for all the times we were alerted to danger by these war dogs. it brings me to tears finding out what happened to these dogs after the war ended. they certainly deserved better from the government who sent them. they were truly the un-sung heroes of our time there! they live forever in our hearts......from a grateful grunt, "alday", alpha co./3rd/22ndinf./25thinf.div.1968.

comments - now that i'm working nights again i think more about all the
nights i spent with candy in the states and in vietnam working evey night on guard duty. i think that there would have been a lot more attacks on air bases and ammo dumps than there were and guarding the perimeter of the camps let a lot of people get a good nights sleep even if they didnot know we were out there on guard duty all night long. i know that my being with candy helped me come home in one piece and i still miss her. i will be retairing from work this year and i hope to get some german shepard dogs to train and to be my compainion again. i would like to thank all the people i servied with and to everyone that servied in the service and made it back from vietnam i wish them a big welcome home, brother's.....

around the sentry dogs. i now have two of my own and am proud to say that my son (an af lt) and i brought our two dogs to ft. benning as part of the atlanta gsdc honor guard the day the war dog memorial. i have never been more proud to take part in any ceremony and, to those of you who hugged and cried over sasi and sirius because they reminded you of your lost best buddies, i hope the experience of being there that day helped ease your pain in some small manner. god bless you and your dogs. vivian holler

comments - looking for anyone who knew or who can help me with info re my
friend michael cummings who was a dog handler in viet nam. he was in the corps from 1967/70. he and his buddies were ambushed and most killed including his dog. i met michael in 1982. he ran a school for dogs in manhattan. he became deaf because of his ambush experience. he committed suicide in 1988. he was planning on writing a book about him and his dog and his marine buddies. as far as i know he never finished it - what a shame. i would love to find out the unit michael was with and when and where they were ambushed. would love to speak with anyone who served with him in the usmc. thanks and semper fi!!! jule spohn - sgt. usmc - 1960/66 973-483-5350.
