Comments = Today is Labor Day. It is 7:19 am and I have been crying for more than 1 hour reading all the stories from the dog handlers in your web site. I watched the documentary on War Dogs last night and was deeply moved. I cried for a long time. When I woke up this morning my first thought went to the war dogs. I had to come to the computer and find some information about these special dogs and their handlers. I never knew that dogs were used in Vietnam. My husband and I "have" a Black Lab that I trained as a companion dog when he was very young. He is now 12 years old. He has filled our lives with many special moments. My husband works for a construccion company and we moved a lot in the States and he always came along with us, but at some point the only work that the company could offer him was overseas, which left us with the painful decision to leave our beloved dog behind with our next door neighbors. Fortunately we have known each other for a while. Solo was also like the kid that they never had. We knew that he couldn't be in better hands, but still it was not easy to do. Every time that we went to the States we tried to visit him even if we were traveling in the opposite direction. We went back to the States last year and bought back the house that we owned before we moved away just to be able to be close to him and our dear friends. He is their dog and "our" dog now. We couldn't take him away from them after keeping him for 4 years, but he still remembers us. We spent a lot of wonderful hours together, but they didn't last too long because we had moved again to another country. I can not imagine what the dogs handlers have been through when they left Vietnam. Besides having to deal with the loss of their human friends, and so many other painful situations, they also had to leave behind their best friend, companion and savior . I can not imagine how much pain someone can endure. My heart is with you all. I have to commend you for your courage and dedication to our country then and always. I know that your lives have been changed forever. I will happly contribute to the war dogs memorial They deserve it. Thank you to the sponsors and anyone involved with this great recognition.

Comments = I had the honor of handling Shadow 585M, the first honor graduate from the first Air Force Patrol Dog School at Lackland AFB, TX in 1968.
While he never got to Viet Nam, he tought me how to be a good handler so that when I got Smokie at Taklhi RTAFB, we were able to survive and protect the base. If it weren't for these nobel animals that Wall in Washington would be much bigger. I found I could trust my dog in a tight situation where I could not trust the officers running the war.

Comments = I just watched the documentary on War Dogs and my heart cries out for all the handlers that were forced to leave their friends behind or lost them in Vietnam to injury. When I was a little girl of 4, our family was close to another family that included a young man named Ray. Ray had been drafted and I remember him well. He told me that he probably wouldn't come home, but not to worry about him. Ray was right. After I grew older, I learned that Ray was a handler and that he and his dog died while saving their entire platoon from ambush. The documentary reminded me of Ray and his love for animals- even at age four, this is something I remember about him.
When I saw the pain in the handlers eyes as they talked about their dogs, I couldn't help writing to you now. My husband lost his shepard about a year ago and it almost broke him. He is a rough and tumble defense attorney and if anyone knew how soft his heart really is, he probably wouldn't have any clients. We decided to adopt a retired racing greyhound shortly after Nietsche died. I wondered how another dog would affect my husband. There is something magical about the greyhound- it is like they all have this uncanny sense of the pain someone has been through. They seem to read the need that a broken spirit or heart has and they begin to heal the wounds and scars on their own. If I hadn't seen this happen time and time again with these dogs, I wouldn't believe it, but its true. We have since begun to rescue these dogs and home them out- to CP kids, to stroke victims, to broken hearts, etc- and everytime each new owner swears their greyhound is different and that he knows their inner thoughts unlike the others. I truely urge any handlers in search of a mended heart to consider this. Like my husband said, you don't feel like you've replaced your lost friend, but found a new identity for him.
My husband's dog, Nietsche, used to howl at night when the distant train rambled by. Greyhounds generally don't howl at such noises. The first night we had our greyhound, Jada, the train roared in the distance. My husband's eyes clouded up and Jada looked at my husband, looked at me, then began to howl just like Nietsche. A smile came across my husband's face and Jada hasn't howled since, but my husband hasn't become saddened by the train either. Like I said, there's something magical about these creatures. Most are destined to be euthanised, in the south- that's usually a 22 bullet. I truely hope that if any GI reading this feels ready for a friend that bonds like the one he had overseas, that he will consider my message. Please contact me with any questions . Thanks and thanks for the enlightening documentary, however sad it was.

Comments = When are we ever going to really be human? I am appalled at the way that these dogs were left at the end of the war. While it is somewhat consoling that there is a memorial being built for the handlers and the dogs, I still think it is disturbing that the military does not apolgize and pass a formal policy that this would never happen again. As an owner of german shepherds for many years, I can attest to the fact that these animals are truly "man's best friend". They have an unconditional devotion and ask nothing in return. Dogs are not property like a tank or helicopter. Those are objects and dogs are not objects. Police dogs are considered "officers" why weren't these animals of very special intelligence considered "soliders". They do feel, and my heart was broken seeing them left, wondering why no one can back to get them. My heart breaks for the handler having to leave the dog and wondering for 30 years what happen, and was their fate human. What is the answer to these questions? Let's learn from this and never let it happen again. The handlers can be assured that these dogs are truly in heaven since "all good dogs go to heaven".
Bless them all and all the handlers and those that served us.

THERE IS A BIDGE CONNECTING HEAVEN AND EARTH.
IT IS CALLED THE RAINBOW BRIDGE BECAUSE OF ITS MANY COLORS.
JUST THIS SIDE OF THE RAINBOW BRIDGE THER IS A LAND OF MEADOWS,
HILLS, AND VALLEYS WITH LUSH GREEN GRASS.
WHEN A BELOVED COMPANION DIES, THE COMPANION GOES TO THIS PLACE.
THERE IS ALWAYS FOOD AND WATER AND WARM SPRING WEATHER.
THE OLD AND FRAIL COMPANIONS ARE YOUNG AGAIN. THOSE WHO WERE
MAIMED ARE WHOLE AGAIN. THEY PLAY ALL DAY WITH EACH OTHER.
THERE IS ONLY ONE THING MISSING.THEY ARE NOT WITH THEIR SPECIAL
PERSON WHO LOVED THEM ON EARTH. SO, EACH DAY THEY RUN AND
PLAY UNTIL THE DAY COMES WHEN ONE SUDDENLY STOPS PLAYING
AND LOOKS UP! THE NOSE TWITCHES! THE EARS ARE UP! THE EYES ARE
STARING! AND THIS ONE SUDDENLY RUNS FROM THE GROUP!
YOU HAVE BEEN SEEN, AND WHEN YOU AND YOUR SPECIAL FRIEND
MEET, YOU TAKE HIM OR HER IN YOUR ARMS AND EMBRACE.
YOU AGAIN POSSESS THAT FEELING THAT ONLY THEY COULD GIVE YOU.
BOTH CACOONED WITH THE COMFORT, SECURITY, AND LOVE
THAT ONLY YOU BOTH SHARE, BEYOND THE MEANING OF WORDS.
YOUR FACE IS KISSED AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN, AND YOU
LOOK ONCE MORE INTO THE EYES OF YOUR TRUSTING COMPANION.
THEN YOU CROSS THE RAINBOW BRIDGE TOGETHER,
NEVER, NEVER AGAIN TO BE SEPARATED. AUTHOR UNKNOWN
I AM TOTALLY DISABLED FROM AN AUTO ACCIDENT. MY SHELTY IS
MY SHADOW. I WOULD BE VERY LONELY IF NOT FOR HER. SHE

FOR US TO CARE AND PROTECT. THERE LOVE IS UNCONDITIONAL FOR
THE WHOLE OF THEIR LIVES. THERE INSTINCT IS TO PROTECT THEIR
MASTER; ALL ARE INNATELY DESIGNED BY GOD FOR THIS PLACE IN
OUR HEARTS.
HOW COULD OUR GOVERNMENT HAVE BEEN SO CALLOUS SO, CRUEL TO
THESE HEROES!!! I HAD NO IDEA DOGS WERE USED IN VIETNAM. I WAS
A YOUNG TEENAGER AT THE END OF VIETNAM AND FAR REMOVED FROM
ANY REALITIES OF WAR. MY HUSBAND AND SON WERE AIRFORCE MEN.
THROUGH THEM I HAVE SEEN WHAT THE MILITARY IS TO SOME DEGREE.
WE CANNOT CHANGE THE PAST BUT I HOPE THIS INCREDIBLE DOCUMENTARY
WILL SAVE ANY FUTURE SCENARIOS OF WAR DOGS. I AM SO THANKFUL
DISCOVERY AND THE ONES BEHIND THIS PROGRAM MADE THIS INFORMATION
AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC.
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A MOVIE MADE IN THE HONOR OF THESE
COURAGEOUS DOGS AND THEIR PARTNERS. I THINK A COFFEE TABLE
BOOK WOULD BE FANTASTIC. IT WOULD BE AN HONOR FOR ME TO
DISPLAY SUCH AN INTRICATE PART OF OUR FREEDOM FIGHT FOR ALL TO
SEE AND LEARN ABOUT WHEN VISITING MY HOME. I ONLY SAW THIS DOCUMENTARY
BY CHANCE LAST NIGHT. THE INTERNET SITE IS FABULOUS I CAN'T KEEP
MY EYES DRY TODAY. ALL OF YOU ARE WAY OVER DUE FOR YOUR
HONOR AND COURAGE YOU GAVE FOR OUR FREEDOM. A FREEDOM THAT
I HOPE WE DO NOT LOOSE IN THIS DEMOCRATIC/SOCIALISTIC ATTITUDE
DEVELOPING IN OUR COUNTRY. NO ONE TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR
THEIR SELVES THEY WANT SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT. WELL, YOU GUYS
DID IT FOR US SO MANY YEARS AGO. WORDS ARE SO INADEQUATE AND

THANK YOU DISCOVERY!

Comments = Im only 19, so I am to young to have been around when the war was going on. My father was in Vietnam in the 101st airborn. He told me about a dog he had in his troop. A German Shepard. I train service dogs for the disabled and have done it for the past 6 years. I would like to join the Army and be a handler for a MWD. If anyone has any information they could send me it would be great.
I would like to donate money to the effort to remember these dogs and their handlers on behalf of ALL(7) of the dogs who I have trained to help people by either being their eyes or by helping them pull a wheelchair, or be search and rescue. When I raise a dog I have them for a year and give them back but at least I know what the dog is doing and where he is and that he or she is ok.
I watched the war dogs show on Discovery and it really touched me, and also pissed me off, why would our government whom is there to protect us, not send these dogs back home to America who saved so many lives?? I may be young, but I know when people do stupid things, and I think it was really stupid and more wrong then anything to leave those dogs in Vietnam.

Comments = I was very moved by the documentary on War Dogs. They were truly heros in the war effort. I am sure the hardest thing for the handlers was to leave their dogs behind. I was horrified and very angry when I found out those poor dogs were left in Vietnam...what a tragedy. I would like to know who was responsible for that decision. I have two dogs I could not live without. I cried when I watched the documentary ...when I found this web site (by accident) I became very emotional just reading some of the comments. Thank you for honoring these special dogs.

Comments = This nation has no justification what-so-ever...for sending all of those men to serve in the ugly war of Vietnam and then slapping them in the face upon their return.
It's nauseating enough to think of what they had to experience while there...But to think that our government ripped out what was left of their hearts by forcing some of them to leave behind their K9 soul mates is appauling. It's as if this nation was blinded by the horrifying bloody experience these men had endured.
A memorial and tribute for these brave and loyal companions is a start...But as a nation we owe these men and their four legged friends a hell of lot more. We owe them now more than ever...since we weren't there when they needed us most
There is no way to give back what has been taken. But it is possible to acknowledge our mistakes and ask for forgiveness through a memorial. I think it should be a BIG one!

I am so sorry that you had to go through what you did there. Thank you for fighting for our country - I just wish I was there when you all came home. I would have thanked you and hugged you and cried with you. I know you and your dog became close. I am just so sorry that our government and our people treated you so poorly then. I will do all that I can to educate as many people as possible about you and the 4-legged ones. At the least, I promise never to forget you. Thank you so much.

Comments = I've had dogs all my life. I've always believed I should think twice about going to or living in any place my dogs were not welcome. Not surprisingly, Viet Nam was no exception - the Air Force certainly wanted me there, but my dogs were not invited... And the dogs they did "invite" - and to whom we owe so much - were not exactly treated, in the end, as welcome guests. Like many of the other Contact Post respondents, the video moved me beyond words and I am immensely grateful to those who have dedicated so much time and effort to the long-overdue memorial. Thank you for providing us an oppotunity to contribute to its completion. With regard to the individuals responsible for the decision to classify those  dogs as expendable equipment, allowing them to be abandoned after the sacrifices they had made and the lives they had saved, I am appalled. My feelings have passed through rage and disgust. This treatment reminds me of the disregard which many disabled veterans received in our veteran hospitals after the war. I believe we would do well to consider those whom we will ask to fight for us in
future conflicts. Can we expect them to place their lives between us and the enemy knowing how poorly the heroes and the wounded were treated in previous conflicts? Will we have earned the right to ask them to do so? Those individuals responsible for abanonding those dogs probably do not merit any particular punishment (at least in this life). But for our own sake some effort should be made to acknowledge their mistake in order to prevent repeating such dishonorable behavior. One possibility - if they can be identified - would be to post their names on a virtual wall of shame.

Comments = I just recently lost one of my best friends, Freckles, who was 1/2 Black Lab and 1/2 Austrailian Shepherd. I was grief stricken when I found out that she had been killed on the highway by my house, especially because I was visiting my Dad at the time. (I'm 16 yrs old) When I came home, my mom told me. People who have never had a cherished friend do not know the feeling. It's like having things ripped from inside you. A few days later, I came accross a picture frame that said, "Faithful friends never leave us... They just run ahead to wait for us in a happier place." Now her picture sits in a place where anyone who visits may see.
A few days after she had been gone, a puppy from down the road came and just sort of adopted my family. Her owners called and said we could have her. Skittles doesn't replace Freckles, but she is a great friend.
I can't even imagine what the war dogs and their handlers went through, and I can say Thank You and I'm Sorry hundreds of times, but it would never come close to expressing my gratitude or my sorrow for all of your losses.
I was able to see only a part of the documentary, but I was moved enough to do my report for American History on War Dogs. People need to know about this.

I LOVED THAT DOG AND IF THERE IS A DOG HEAVEN, HE'S LOOKING DOWN WAGGING HIS TAIL AND WAITING FOR THE COMMAND, "OK BOY"

Comments = Does anyone remember the dog called Nemo.  The reason I ask, is that I was responsible for aeromedically evacuating him back to the United States on a human AeroMed Evac Flight. He had been shot below one eye (I can't remember which anymore), and the bullet exited out his neck.  He was cared for by the regular in-flight medical team which consisted of two flight nurses and three aeromedical evacuation technicians I was an AeroMedical Evacuation Operations Officer stationed at Tan Son Nhut at the time.(I believe the time frame was late 1967, but I may have my times confused, since he wasn't the only gaurd dog we evacuated in this way). Several years later, while I was visiting friends who were stationed at Lackland. AFB, my buddy offered to take me on a tour of the gaurd dog school there. While we were being escorted around by one of the senior trainers, we came upon a cage and low and behold, there was old Nemo who was to my surprise, still alive.  He was in pretty bad shape though, he still had the wound track and it was infected at that time, and was draining.  The training NCO apparently hadn't heard of Nemo's story, and I related it to him as best I could remember it. In late 1966 there was an attack on Tan Son Nhut, in which 43 Viet Cong were killed.  Among the dead, were 15 of the base barbers.  During their attack some of the VC had secreted themselves under a small lake, by breathing through bamboo tubes.  The base fence went through this lake.  Nemo and his handler were patroling along side of the lake, when I guess Nemo, smelled the VC's bad breath, or at least something alerted him.  The handler released him, and he immediately jumped into the water and quickly attached himself to a VC. Then all hell broke loose.  The handler alerted the base security forces, and eventually the attack was thwarted.  It was during this battle, that Nemo got his wounds.  In my mind, Nemo has always been a hero, and I love to tell others about him. The truth is, I've never been sure if I'm telling the absolute truth about him, or merely repeating rumors I heard there before I moved him on the Air Evac. So I would appreciate hearing from anyone with first hand information about old Nemo, and his wounds and  the battles in which he was involved. Further, I have been told by sources in the Air Force, a long time ago, that Nemo was decorated, and given a medal.  I was also told that when he died, that he was stuffed and put into the Smithsonian Institution.  Now, again, I am not sure of any of this, and would appreciate someone setting the record straight.

Comments = Hi,
I am not an American, but I must contact you after watching the War Dogs film on Discovery channel.  I feel so bad about that the dogs were not allowed to return home after the Vietnam war.  Building a memorial for war dogs is a great idea.  In addition, I would like to suggest you to promote the legislation for protecting war dogs.  War dogs should not be abandoned just like no abandoning of any soldier's life.  What happened to the war dogs in Vietnam was wrong and should never happen again.  Legislation of war dog-protection law will prevent this to happen again which makes the sacrifice of those war dogs in Vietnam not in vain.  In the end, I would like to say that I feel strongly for the dogs and for the dog handlers who were forced to accept the cruel destiny of the dogs.  I wish you the best, and hope that eventually the war dogs will be protected by law.  Thank you very much for your attention.  I look forward to hearing your thought about my suggestion.
Sincerely,

I saw the movie, I read the book, and now were producing the bears...BEARS FOR WAR DOGS.  Please view our site at www.bearsforacause.cc and see what our group is doing to raise monies for The War Dog Memorial Fund, to honor these 4-legged soldiers of war, whom were called to duty and never came home. We love you all so much, you brave, wonderful, precious creatures of God, and will honor you in the Year 2000. Nothing will stand in our way, there is so much attention to your honor and we respect all these wonderful people whom want these memorials erected in your honor. Our wish is that one of the memorials will be right next to the Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Comments = Sorry for writing in this place, but i really want to pay a great respect and salute to the war dogs and their handlers in Vietnam war. I always read and watch things about war , aviation, ww2  but the war dogs documentary i watched last day make me cry honestly , i didn't know why although i m a man already ( not lady) . I m a cadet officer in Royal Malaysian Air Force and now under training. I m a chinese in Malaysia and the only few of the chinese in Air Force. My comrades in arms majority are malay and they didn't like dogs. But yesterday when we wathched the documantary together , they all changed their mind by always said the dogs are dirty and rude. They strated to respect it. And i really touched by the untold stories od War Dogs --- the forgotten Heroes. I have a dog in my house , so i know how intellegent it was. They are smart and a true friend for human being, they won't cheat us anyway. And i sad to hear the dogs were left behind , i know how the handlers feel that time, i feel sorry for that. Really. The war dogs saved life , so we also have to save them.
Lastly , i like to pay a salute to them , thanks for the stories .

Comments = After seeing the documentary "War Dogs,Americas forgotten heroes", I was reminded that During Feb 69-Nov 69 I was in Phu Loi next to the  37th inf (scout Dog platoon).I used to watch the handlers put the K-9s through their paces and I was always amazed at the personal relationship between handler and K-9.Watching the documentary saddened me because I had wondered for years what had become of those noble dogs.Like many others,I could not control my emotions knowing the K-9s had been left behind to suffer an unknown fate.Unconditional love these K-9s had to offer and our government as usual were cold-hearted.I wasn't a K-9 handler in Vietnam, but now I am a handler in civilian life and I'm enjoying my times with this wonderful bundle of life.

Comments = I was never in the service, being a woman, but I am a dog lover and I have one looming question.  "HOW CAN ANY LAME BRAINED, HARD NOSED, UNCARING PERSON CALL A LIVING ENTITY, WHETHER IT BE PERSON OR ANIMAL CALL IT OR THEM, MILLITARY EQUIPMENT, AND LEAVE THEM BEHIND."  Is that what they call all the Americans and Our Boys sent over there, "Military Equipment" to be left over there after their Blunder?  I support our Vietnam Vets. and their K=9 partners, but what Our Government and the American people did to both Man and their K-9 Partners was a crime.  There should never have been a necessity for them to fight so hard to gain the recognition they so richly deserve.  Our government didn't have to beg and fight to get Our boys to go to Vietnam, and they should not have to fight to get the recognition for themselves and they K=9 Partners.  Would love to know who it was that determined that these "Valiant Soldiers" and that is what they were and still are, they even have a Service Number, is so I can ask if they had Family in any War and ask if they were "Military Equipment" to be left behind. I would like to help if I can raise money for the long over due Memorial.  I am telling everyone I know about this. Post where we can get in touch with someone who handles this.

As a police K9 handler, I also have had situations where my dogs have saved my life and others, police and civilians alike, and know firsthand what a priceless gift they are. It is an honor and a privilege to serve with a K9 partner and it is heartwarming to see these HEROES, canine and human, finally receive the recognition and honor they so justly deserve.

Comments = I went to the Philipines (6200 Security Police K-9)  in June 1969, we were the first Security Police Flight out of Tech School in about one year that didn't go directly to Nam.  I remember working the washouts, bomb dump and other posts with my dog (and best friend) for the 18 months I was in SEA.  Being so young and having something going on every night on post made my life a lot easier having my dog with me.  I made a lot of good friends in the K-9 section and still after 30 years am still in contact with other handlers that were there.  I am now 48, a corrections enforcement supervisor and STIll have german shepherds (train and have a kennel). Thanks for the Documentary,  WAR DOGS were even in the P.I.   Thanks again, you  and the dogs have my and my families support for the memorials.

For the past year I have been compiling a unit roster of the handlers and dogs of the 39th IPSD from 1966 thru 1971. My goal is to get handlers in touch with other, especially ones had the same dog in different years. Any former member of the platoon may contact me to get or give information.

Just a note to make a correction from my last post.  I posted the wrong IDs for my dogs, Tiger and Kelly.  Tiger's # was 9A34 and Kelly's was 819A, had them backwards.  Not important to most, but in case someone is tracking a dog's history before my tour and after, it makes a difference.  Thanks to your website for all the valuable info. and contacts that has been possible.  Keep up the good work.
