Comments = I did not serve in the war,but I have been following the heart wreching story of all those brave dogs. I recently acquired an ornate urn made from a 105mm shell. On it is inscribed "Taffey-Danang,Vietnam-65-66. I would be most appreciative if anyone has any memories of Taffey. I am so impressed with your efforts that I have just sent in a donation. Thank you for all your efforts in this great cause!

Comments = I'm from the U.K and i've only just seen half of the documentary on TV when i was flicking through the channels. I feel so emotional and just wanna burst into tears :*( I called my German Shepard 'Max' over to sit with me because I wanted him to be there. It's just so wrong how most of these dogs who saved so many lives were just left by the government to be put down. Only 200 were flown back to America. I don't even think the handlers would have minded them being put into quarentine for 6 months and then taking them home. The poor dogs wouldn't have known what was going on when their handlers were leaving them - never to be seen again - think how hard it must have been for the handlers just to walk away form the animal that has kept them in this world, not knowing what was going to happen to it - if it was going to the South - or to be put down. This is going to leave a permanent emotional scar on people's lives. The governmant could and should have made is so these dogs to be taken to a new life in america. I'll never forget this documentary and I hope that it will be shown again soon so i can see the whole of it.

Comments = Sorry to crash in on this part of the site, but we at Dogs Today magazine in Britain all watched the War Dogs documentary on Channel 4 this weekend and were so moved by the tales we felt we must contact you. We would like to perhaps run something in the magazine - we would also be keen to hear from any British war veterans with similar stories and whether or not there is a British memorial to the work carried out by these brave animals. Please contact us Dogs Today Magazine, Pankhust Farm, Bagshot Road, West End, Woking, Surrey, GU24 9QR, England. Many thanks. Nina Butler - Assistant Editor, Dogs Today

Comments = I never handled dogs in the Dutch army, the only time i saw dogs on a military installation was in Bosnia (10/01/96 - 04/02/97) when a nest of puppies was born on Buso-2 (Busovaca). The entire compound there (i merely visited, being based elsewhere) sort of "adopted" the puppy's and would have lynched people who hurt them. At least one of the puppy's was taken to the Netherlands by a Lt.Colonel (privileges of rank....), the others? i hope they have found a good home. A lot of domestic animals were abandoned in former Yugoslavia.
When i saw the documentary on the National Geographic channel, i was touched. One of the Contact Post messages on this site stated that one day the handlers would be reunited with their buddys. Perhaps i'm sentimental, but like the documentary it brought tears to my eyes.

Comments = I would like to say that I was not in Vietnam, but I have been a dog handler for more then 10 years. And in those 10 years I had the opportunity to deploy twice to Bosnia. Once with 1st Armour Division and once with 1st Infantry Division. I was not one of the first ones in there, but the first time I was there they did not have all the comforts of home like they do now. We did a lot of walking patrols through areas that might have land mines or trip wires. My partner alerted me to approximately 50 pounds of TNT dynamite and 3 pounds of C-4 that was set up to blow up two houses in Musium sector. I would like to think him for helping me in coming home both times with anything happening. He is no longer in the program due to injuries that he got after we came home.

Comments = I am conducting research for a documentary film on the Mayaguez Incident for the Discovery Channel. We are aware that the 56th Security Police Squadron out of Nakhom Phanom Thailand was initially involved and know about the tragic accident that claimed so many of their lives. We are looking to contact family members of those lost, survivors of the operation, and others with intimate knowledge of the details of the Incident so that we may track down any photos or moving images of the participants, aspects of the operation, and more specifically, of the accident itself. In addition to images of the event we also have a question: Who ordered the Security Police into action in the Mayaguez Incident? Finally, we know a memorial service is held every May at Luke AFB in Arizona. Does anyone have any home movies of this event? Who might we contact in order to film the event this year? This will be a tasteful hour-long documentary in the same vein as previous films we've done (such as for the National POW Museum, "Situation Critical: The USS Forrestal," and "The True Story of Top Gun"). Please feel free to contact me at 703.908.4242 (fax: 703.243.4023) or jwarren@henninger.com with any questions, comments, or research suggestions.

Comments = I have watched the beautiful documentary of the war dogs and cried the whole way through it...for the handlers and for the dogs.  It was tough to keep watching but I felt compelled.  Like so many others have said, unless you have owned a German Shepherd Dog, you cannot know the unparalleled devotion and loyalty these dogs have towards their people.  I cannot imagine what these dogs were thinking when they were left behind, and do not pretend to know what their handlers had to endure knowing that they had to leave their best friends.  Thank you to the men and their dogs who served our country.  And thank you for your efforts to recognize our war dogs.

Comments = Thank you so very much for making this memorial possible.  My K-9 unit was the first of its kind in the history of the Navy.  We patroled outside of Danang, Viet Nam in a place called Marble Mountain and also on Hill 327 Red Beach. Handling my dog was the biggest part of my life over there when I was off I always checked on him he was my right arm and my security.  Many nights he saved me from snipers on a remote fenceline and I will never go a single day without thinking of him.

Comments = I was station at Bien Hoa, Viet Nam as a Dog Handler.  My dog's name was Fritz and he was a Black Belgian Sheppard. Fritz was probably the most genlte and loving dog I have ever had ever seen.  Don't get me wrong he was no pet either. When we were on patrol and  when put on command to "Hit" he was one of the best attack dogs I had ever seen. Fritz was not only my best friend and companion he also provided me with the confidence that I needed to survive. As all Dog Handlers know you could not have depended on any other being on this entire planet that would protect you, stand by you and if necessary, to die for you as your dog would have. There were many nights while on patrol Fritz  "alerted" and I reported to CSC.  When things got serious either back up teams
were deployed to the sector or helicopter support was dispatched. The bravest thing Fritz ever did for me was while one night on patrol he suddenly leaped forward in front of me then jumped back and started walking side ways pushing me back.  I never seen him do that before, it was pitch black and you couldn't see your hand in front of you.  I shined my light down the road and there it was a corbra coiled up ready to strike.  Needless to say I shot the snake and immediatly checked Fritz's head because I thought he took a hit from the cobra.  I was was one of the worst feelings I had ever felt, I thought Fritz would die. He was immediately taken to the vets and observed. They could not find any signs of him being bitten, thank God.  This is just one example of how Fritz was always there for me.  It broke my heart to leave him there when I rotated back to the stated.  I handled three dogs in my four year K-9 career and I loved all three dogs but I have to honestly say Fritz (Bien Hoa) will always be my favorite. I recently found this web page and I think it is the greatest.  I only wish I had had seen it sooner.  I just made contact with some of my old Dog Handler buddies.  I love it. Thank you. What the hell did the top brass think was going to happen to all these abandoned dogs????? This country is WIERD, you can screw peoples minds up in various ways, but to make an ENFORCED separation between to animals who have bonded and got close (the human animal and the sog) is cruel to the extreme, had the dogs and the men/women not gone through enough?????I am proud of you, even if sometime syour country doesn't act that way. I have sent this site all over the world, I bought the T Shirt - seen the picture (hugs) to you all, maybe somewhere in the Vietnam jungles, there are little USA puppies running around........God Bless you all. I extended to stay with him but when I returned from 30 day leave Anno had been assigned another handler. There were no dogs available at that time so I was assigned to Security. I got a short visit to the kennel and Anno didn't look right. It was a short time later that I found out that he had died from Lepto. Some of my friends said it was more from a broken heart. It was another three months before I got back into the K-9 Section for a short while before I shipped stateside. I've worked with many different dogs since then but none as memorable as Anno.

Comments = As of this date, I am back in Korea, 24 years after my first tour there.  From Feb 76 to Mar 77, I was a Sentry Dog Handler on missle sites in Korea during a time when tensions were high, and so was the threat.  Following Korea, I became a handler of Patrol, then Narcostics, finally Expolosives Detector Dogs.  I saw the WAR DOGS program on National Geographic via the local MWR cable channel, and though I was not in a shooting war, I nonetheless feel connected with those who were in and portrayed in the video.  I came to know the importance of the dog to the mission, whatever the mission was, AND to know first hand the loss of my K-9 companion. After working the Cuban Refugee mission at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, my dog (Yankee) had to be put down due to hip problems.  I had him for almost 2 1/2 years.  I sat in his kennel and bawled after it was done.  At least at Fort Sill we had a cemetary for our departed comrades.  It had one when I arrived; when I revisted it some 10 years later, there were almost 15 or so.  There are places where the true value of the MWD is properly remembered.

Comments = I had Lobo on both tours. I worked mostly with CAP, and RECON. I had a great friend that I didnt get to say "Good by" to. His name is Bill Lindburg. He was from Long Beech, Cal. We were at L.Z. Ross in Feb. 70. He went to OP Ryder and a day later I was rotated. If anyone has any information about Bill, please contact me. I have been trying for all these years to find him. And I would love to hear from anyone else that I served with.  About LOBO. Well he wae the best at mines and detecting ambushes. He really saved alot of asses in the CAP units that we worked with. WE worked mostly with 1st. and 4th. CAP. Words cant explain how much I miss that guy.

What happened to the dogs overseas was wrong and I hope will never be repeated. I can only compare it to be asked to kill a family member. I'm not bitter though and still continue to work a K-9 in civilian law enforcement.

Comments = My letter is in response to the documentary, "WarDogs". Shown bij National Geographic Channel, on our local TV., on 24 febr. 2000. Thank you for the eye opener. I was deeply moved, and the tissuebox was not far away. I myself, have right now 8 German Shepherd, at one time up to 16. I know how attached they are to you. It must have been heartbreaking for their handlers to leave their " brother" behind. It is anoutrage, that these dogs ere left as " a piece of equipment". This person(s) who ordered this, and I should never meet, or I can nog speak for my reaction. The dogs saved many liives, they are heroes, yet to be discarded as " a piece of equipment". By leaving the dogs with the Vietnames, you condemn them to a cruel death. Do you not know? A favorie dish in Vietnam is dogmeat. Think about it.
Will this " War-dogs" VDO be available in other countries, such as Thailand?  If yes, can you tell me, where? Will the purchase money go towards the War-dog menorial Fund? Wilma Ratanaruka, Thailand 3-3-2000

Comments = I've visited the site several times, and each time I remember Lad and miss him more.  I picked him up and retrained him from a sentry to a patrol dog on TDY in Germany.  Also trained a small sheperd named Smokey and returned to Turkey with both.  I kept Lad for my Turkey tour and Smokey was picked-up by a fellow handler.  Lad protected me from a snake bite while on the perimiter and was a source of comfort/confidence while clearing an aera of the flightline with a sniper (in '74 the Turks * Greeks were having a go at eachother while NATO was caught in the middle).  Altho I didn't get the call for Nam, several of my classmates did, but I do appreciate the bond between handler & patrol dog.  Lad was in good shape when I left to rotate back to the states but when i left Lad, I also left a piece of me. And when I left K-9, I also left a great bunch of guys.  Anyone who might have had some contact with Lad @ Incirlik after '74 please get in touch.  And any of my brother-handlers who recognize the names/stories, please feel free to drop me an e-mail.

Comments = Hi , I am not a handler but I have handle my own dogs all my life, even now. They only want a little food and water and they love you with their life. I just want to give the answer to soo many question on how could our military leaders leave them there. Here is the answer: ONLY 2 factors to know:
1. Public media is shape by the movies and TV newscaster, who happened to believe that only the SS and germans are bad people who killed many in europe. The other "people" are not worth mentioning in movies or books. I have been involved in 2 wars(c0nflicts) and there are more millions of good people killed in asia and africa by dictators and hollywood never made more than one movie of it. Why ? cause they are considered humans. So the same with dogs, they are not humans , so they do not make movies of it.
2. The military leaders are following orders. Orders are given by politician and presidents and generals. As well know most leaders and politician never did serve in war, how could they know what bravery , loyalty and love is?  We have
one in the white house right now. They care for trees and rivers and smog, but not love, loyalty and honor. People has to understand that leaders make decision for the military, the military just obey the civilian. If you put a weirdo in the white house or capitol, then you get weird decisions.....and so do not asked how it could happen.....next time you vote...vote for people who respect LIFE and love.

Comments = Well, I've read all the comments, viewed as much as possible of the program on the Discovery Channel and the "segment" on CNN and I have 6 copies of the tape - purchased w/ Nature Recipe kibble, etc. when I found out (after a lot of phone calls) what was happening.  I wan't on the net 'til last week soI had no place to express my grief and outrage.  I have four German Shepherd's and would have a dozen if I had the time, space & money it takes to care for them.  When I look at the two I have now-asleep on one of many beds inside the house-my heart breaks AND I start crying again when I think of those wonderful, intelligent, loyal dogs in the middle all that mess - that they were left behind makes me so angry and sad that I wish I could not think about it.  I still have not viewed the entire tape, because I cannot stop crying, but have seen various segments - the end of it with the muzzeled dog tore me apart.  Who made the decision to leave these animals behind?  Why did people "donate" their dog to the "war effort"?  Why isn't the memorial next to the wall in D.C.?  What happened to those dogs left behind?  Although I'm not sure I want to know - I hope they were not used for breeding to provide skins for coats!  I've seen pictures of those Shepherds in horrible configurations and have wondered where these "people" get them  - hopefully the "breeder's" are not sending them over!War is a nightmare - why do we insist on interjecting animals into the fracas?  I remember the VietNam mess - I had my first German Shepherd and drove my brother-in-law to the transit center for his trip to Vietnam, I had friends that went and some that did not, at no time did I know that they were "taking"dogs over to their dirty work, and I especially did not know they did not come home, or died in "the kennel" from heat stroke, or bloat, or guns or...how disgusting.

Comments = I commented last night, but this is the lst time I've used this sort of thing - just signed up on the net last week and found all of this thru much "wandering" - actually off the CNN Main - under War Dogs - I still cannot believe they did what they did- after reading most of the comments from handler's I'm even more appalled and angry.  It is bad enough the dogs were left behind, but what kind of care do these animals get while in the"service" of this country?  Hot spots!  Bad food!  Draining wounds - while in "kennel" here!  An 8yr. old and an llyr. old!!!  Were these miracle shepherds?  No hip displaysia, arthritis, infected ear canals, bad skin etc. etc. - German Shepherd problems!  WHY are they left in kennel runs?  Of all the social, people-orientated dogs in the world the German Shepherd is at the top of the list - unfortunately that is their problem - you can put them thru all that awful, violent training and still take them home!  Mine live inside the house - part of the family - Kelsey is 12 and still gets her squeaky out of her toy box to antagonize my other shepherd-Joe who is also 12.  They would have never survived in Vietnam.  I had a friend who gave his shepherd to the army and I wondered why he wouldn't watch the show on tv or view the tape I have - he knew what I didn't and I hope he is very ashamed.  I wonder how many breeder's "gave" away dogs for the war - I'm pretty sure one of them was interviewed on the CNN segment - I'm sure her name is on the AKC family tree for two of my dogs.  It would be nice if the breeders were more responsible - than these magnificent dogs wouldn't have so many medical problems and go to such horrible homes.

Comments = I am a 16 yr old girl from Australia.  I don't know of anyone who served in Vietnam much less anyone who served as a dog handler.  After seeing the Discovery Channel's documentary I felt compelled to write to this site and the soldiers who fought with these brave dogs in Vietnam.  I can understand how people form such strong bonds with dogs and other animals and when that animal shares every moment of your life in a situation like Vietnam that bond becomes stronger than anyone can describe.  My aunt has a german shepard who is about two years old and even though I don't live with my aunt and her dog I would hate to have anything happen to him. The memorials America has finally built to honor these dogs and their handlers may be late in coming, but people can rest assured that even without a memorial, the war dogs of Vietnam and other great wars in history will always hold a special and deeply honored place in the hearts of the people who raised, trained, fought and ultimately remember these dogs not as military supplies or equipment, but as man's best friend.

Comments = I wasn't even born during Vietnam, but my father was there. He passed his love for the courageous German Shepherds on to me. I have been raising them now for six years. I wrote this in memory of every shepherd and the person they have loved. Gone but not forgotten - how those words ring true, Some will scoff and in wonder" how can they mean a thing to you?" Yes I realize, I've not the experience you've had, Yet everything I've learned of that time - I learned from my dad. He also passed to me a passion for a friend, Love and laughs for life - loyalty 'till the end. Human love knows limits that a shepherds heart would never touch, Giving their life for their master - for them that's not too much. God knew that we would fail each other - often not being there in another's time of  need,  So He created for us this guardian angel breed. Our limited hearts remember fondly those who gave their lives for us,  Never faltering in their ever present trust. No matter the reason that our heroes have fallen',  It will always be important -- that they are gone but not forgotten!!!

Through the sight I have found some old friends and have shed many tears while reading others accounts of vietnam. I have never been prouder to have been a dog handler than I am right now.  Finally our four footed friends are getting the recognition they so richly deserve.  I didn't realize that so many others have felt as I do about their dogs. Fritz's picture sits on my dresser to this day.  Leaving him in Vietnam was one of the hardest things I have ever done. WE had been through a lot together. We went to Vietnam as a team and I came home alone.  I'm sure that anyone who teamed up with him after I left felt as I did about him. I was blessed. God bless our dogs.

Comments = I'm only an animal lover and wish to say I'm appauled that here on your site I read that the first memorial was unveiled on President's Day this year and I never hear anything about it.  Our government failed to recognize the MEN and WOMEN from the Vietnam war properly until years later, it doesn't surprise me that many Americans, such as myself, knew nothing of the dogs who fought with them.  If you can give me information on further reading on this topic, I'd be grateful.  Our police K-9 dogs are issued bullet-proof vests and get hero tributes, why not those in war?  Do they deserve any less?

Comments = I have a brother, a husband, and an ex-husband who all made it out of Vietnam as much in one piece as anyone ever made it out.  I know that in one way or another a HUGE debt is owed to our nation's war dogs, for Vietnam and for all the other wars they've served in.  One gets attached enough to man's oldest companion just as a pet; I can only imagine the attachment that must occur when your life is held in furry paws and keen senses.  There are those who say that animals have no souls and, therefore, will not meet us in heaven.  Those of us who have loved and lost our dog family members know this is not true. To those of you who lost your beloved K-9 buddies, my heart goes out to you.

Comments = I was with the 377th SPS at TSN from July 68 to July of 69. I worked with a solid black Belgium Shepard named Kreiger, AO77.  He was a real worker, looking for 'Charlie' was his life calling.  Really got worked up when it got HOT (action)- loved mortor and rocket attacks. I had a hard time keeping him down. To him it was 'Party Time'.  Anyone have him after I left?  Really like to know.
