Comments = The above information is actually about my Grandfather, Captain Ryland Croshaw. He was a veternarian during WW II. I have been looking for more information about the WW II dogs. I have some information and I am still looking for more. For those of you who know, there is a WW II memorial in Lincoln, Nebraska. "And they never complained" is inscribed on the bottom of the monument. If anyone can provide me more information about the dogs, it would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.

Comments = Happy got his name because in spite of all his training, all he would do was wag his tail.  They took Happy off the books and he was to be executed - for being happy.  Everyone loved him and we fed him from our own meals.  He was at Nakhon Phamon for years and although I do not know his fate, he comforted many a man who was on the edge by showing in the end love would prevail over all.  God gave man dominion over the beast, but we have learned many a lesson from the likes of Happy, who taught many the meaning of love when they needed to see it most.

Comments = We touched the lives of many Marines and saved thousands more.  We were mobile in that we worked ("walked point")for these units. "POINT" was by far the hardest and most costliest in terms of the loss of human life. Units welcomed us and loved to have the dogs as another reminder of their homes. I was 18 years old when I picked up Chipper.  I did not know until a few weeks later that his last handler, "Ski" was killed in action in May 70.  That still would not have taken anything away from me.  Chipper was also from my home town of East Northport, New York.  I always seen the town's name on his service book but never could have imagined that we were both from the same town.  Small world! The Vietnam Dog Handlers Association has brought many of us together but I'm still looking for my class that graduated from Ft Benning in Apr 70. We were also the class that had Lt Lindsey (OIC)who was KIA in 1971.  He died with his Marines, carrying Mine and Booby Trap handler Porter out to a waiting helo. The NVA had placed a few well concealed booby traps on the only available clearing to land the helo.  Lindsey carried Porter with the help of Ricky Rogers, whose dog "Kelly" was also wounded. The blast that killed Lindsey and Porter also wounded Rogers, again. That was their last patrol but by maintaining these sites, these men will never fade from memory.  Today is July 4th 2000 and they have been gone for 29 years.  I miss you guys. Jan and Feb 1971 were bad months for us and we lost many handlers and their dogs. I lost my faith in God then but have it back today and will never lose it again.  I stayed in the Marine Corps for 27 years on Active duty and Reserves to make sure that young Marines never needlessly die because of some training or insite from a veteran that they had missed.  I can't help you anymore.  Learn from the lessons of Vietnam.  The next time, bring the dogs home.  It's the least we can do for them.  My daughter says a prayer for Chipper EVERY NIGHT. Comments = The story I have just seen leaves no doubt in my mind just how noble and heroic dogs truly are.  To see the loyalty in their eyes, the look of utter devotion and willingness to perform their duty to their handlers truly defines obedience.  It is all so overwhelming to say the least.  These are animals that were trained for and utilized by the armed forces of the United States of America.  It saddens my heart to know the ultimate fate they faced at the end of this horrible place. To them, it was simply home.  There is no way that dogs will ever recognize their past heroic deeds, but that dosen't mean that we as their masters, owners and Handlers won't.

Comments = I've never even known anyone who's served in Vietnam- even my father was fortunate enough to be discharged before it started... but at 33, thank the soldiers, enormously, for their sacrifices.  I just saw the Discovery documentary on dogs serving in war--- and sobbed (hitching and gasping sobs) for one solid hour, hugging my cocker spaniel in my lap the whole time.  I never knew dogs served as soldiers--- and was filled with pride at their (and their handlers) bravery.  I was also filled with dismay and disgust (and almost squeezed my poor, bewildered best friend out of breath) listening to how the government 'disposed' of the soldiers the considered so much armament.  Thank you, Discovery for the enlightenment. Thank you handlers for your courage under fire, and love for dogs.  And, thank you soldiers, four-footed and two, for the freedom I enjoy.

Comments = Dear People: I don't have a story but I did see the Discovery Channel's documentary on "War Dogs - American's Forgotten Heroes." I was shocked, heartbroken, and in disbelief that after the Vietnam War ended most of these dogs were abandoned, torn away from the men who loved them, and turned over to the Vietnamese for an uncertain fate. I am ashamed that our military viewed these brave and devoted animals expendable equipment to be disposed of! This was the ultimate betrayal. I am glad the truth is known and that a fitting memorial has been established. HOWEVER: I need to know what the military's policy
for war dogs serving our country now? Does the same shameful policy of abandonment and disposal still exist?  If so, what can be done to change this situation so that our canine veterans will be given the same treatment as human soldiers? I am deeply troubled by the thought that our war dogs may not be protected now and in the future from such treatment. PLEASE let me know what the current policy is. If I can help in any way, please let me know what I can do.  Thank you,

Comments = Thank you for broadcasting "War Dogs" via the Discovery Channel. I was born in 1965, so I was obviously not part of the war. But I was moved to tears when I watched this documentary of these intelligent, heroic dogs. They were somehow forgotten when our history books were written. Shame on our Military and U.S. Officials who committed one of the ugiliest war crimes by abandoning our American War Dogs. I am in anguish over the injustice and abuse these dogs experienced. We owe it to every loyal dog who saved a life to do something monumental for them today.

Comments = It was not until recently that I learned that German Shepherds were used in the military. I'm sure I'm not alone in this. I have two German Shepherds of my own who I love and are my best friends in the whole world. After reading the information provided here I was very upset that the military views these precious beings as equipment. My mind cannot conceive what it would be like to leave my companion behind to whatever fate. I live in Seattle, WA and plan to visit the memorial in Riverside, CA. I support all that you are doing to make these heros not forgotton.

Comments = I didn't serve in Vietnam since I was only a young boy at the time. However, I served on active duty with the U.S. Army from 1990-1997 and currently serve as an active member of the USAFR. I watched the War Dogs documentary on the Discovery Channel. It was an awesome piece of work and a long overdue recognition for the Veterans!! To all the Vietnam Veterans and especially the dog handlers during Vietnam, God Bless you all. It angered and upset me that some cold-hearted, uninformed bureaucrat made a decision, or convinced others in positions of power not to ship these dogs home. It was unexcusable and unacceptable for the U.S. government to betray these dogs by leaving them in Vietnam. Let's make sure it doesn't happen again! Organize, petition, and otherwise do what we legally can to ensure that soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines never again have to leave these canine heros behind. These dogs deserved more and so did the American people!

Comments = A memorial to war dogs might bring their story to the attention of enough people that the sickening abandonment of the dogs may not be repeated. Even if they are not able to be pets again, there should be a better alternative than leaving them behind. If there is money left beyond the needs for the memorial(s), perhaps a compound could be built where they can be cared for after their service. I hope handlers now have the option of adopting their dog-partners after their service is thorough; who but their own handlers would be better to help them adjust to ordinary life?

The next day I went to the Animal Control and adopted a beautiful German Shepherd that I named Scout in honor of all the K-9s that have served their country and loved their handlers. I cannot understand how the government could just leave those faithful soldiers there to die. My heart-felt sympathy to the handlers who had to leave their best friends behind. Comments = I served in East Timor with No 2 Air Field Defence Squadron Royal Australian Air Force from 21 Sep 99 to 25 Feb 00. Attached to our Squadron Was a section of Military Working Dogs, mostly German Shepherds but some Belgian Malimoirs as well. I was a scout in a four man patrol and as such I worked with Handlers and their Dogs on the majority of patrols through the villagers and jungle in and around Dili. The dogs roles were both in crowd control and scouting. In this role they were invaluable. I thought that the people reading this site would like to know that every dog that served in Timor returned to Australia and were awarded the same medals as any of us. They spent 30 days in Quarantine then were released back to their handlers to continue serving on their bases. I was so impressed both with the capabilities of the MWD's and the loyalty of the handler and dog that I am now part way through a 22 week Dog course to become a handler. Their are still RAAF dogs in Timor working for the UN. If anyone wants to talk with me about the dogs in Timor or the RAAF dogs in general(obvious restructions apply on certain things)do not hesitate to contact me.

Comments = I am a female, 52 years old, living in NC. I have written much poetry about the Vietnam war, and am in the process of writing about these forgotten heroes...for they must share the honor of those I have already written of.The Wall is coming here in Sept. and if I am asked to read anything I have written, these heroes MUST be included-forgotten no longer. I found this site last night, and read the names of the many dogs, I did not see the doc. on war dogs, and to be quite honest - would never have made it through the program...it is all I can do to read the posts here- as it breaks my heart. I don't know if it would be ok to list the names I can find of these wonderful dogs - *who never made it to a wall*- in my work. I realize they had in many cases, more than one handler, and I would not be afforded the time or space to give credit to each of them- I have already tried to honor the 'people'- this would be about the dogs only- but I do not want to do anything that would not be ok with those who had the relationships with these animals.
I have read that there are questions and hurts, as to the fate of the majority of these service dogs. I see that some were 'put down' and some just left. I can tell only a part - and would like to use the license of a writer, from the dogs point of view, to bring attention to what was done but also, to perhaps bring an ending that will perhaps offer a little comfort to those who do not know the fate of their 'friend'. I can do this 'poem' without using actual names I have found on this site, but to use them, I need an opinion of someone here as to if they think it would be ok- I would like to credit these life savers with their identity...if you have an opinion- yea, or nay; a question, any thing, please contact me as I do ask for your help- who knows better than you, how you feel? I hope the things I have already written will bring attention, and honor, not only to the Names on the Wall- but, importantly, to those of you who came back. Please expedite any comments, as this is a work in progress, and I wish to finish it by Sept. 1.
Thanks for your time. Dani

I own two gorgeous Siberian Huskies, who are like my children. I stumbled across this site by accident while searching a friend's site for information on wolves. I was touched by all your stories and am ordering the videotape and making my contribution to the War Dogs memorial fund ASAP! I hate leaving my dogs alone when I travel on business, and I have experienced the pain of almost losing Kia to parvo, living in the kennel with her for a week while she (thank God) recovered; but I can't begin to imagine the pain of losing your dogs in war, or, worse, being forced to leave them behind!! Just because they're furry and don't "talk" like we do, they were considered "equipment." What an outrage! These are our friends and loved ones! To Jeffrey Bennett and everyone who worked on this film, thanks! To the handlers and, more importantly, to the dogs themselves, you will forever more be in my thoughts after seeing this site.

When I bought the tape of the moument dedication I cried like a baby, but at the same time I felt like Donner and Ladd were finalily honored for their dedication to their duty.It also gave me a very strong lothying of the way in which they were treated by our gloriest government!!! Comments = Meanest dog I ever had, tried to kill me the first time I took him out of his run after the introduction period. After a short tussle we came to a mutual understanding and respect for each other. Man did I love that dog. He was my best friend over there. I cried when I had to leave him. Still have several pictures which I look at from time to time.

Comments = We were at the Ft. Benning Memorial Service this past Sunday, Oct. 8th.
At the museum I had a conversation with a handler who had donated 3 pictures of his dog "Colonel".
I did not get his name. In viewing the pictures of the program on the way home, I thought one of the pictures might be of him and "Colonel". On his shirt is the name "Luther" I believe, that is my last name and my husband's last name. Bill and Carol Luther. He is a retired "Colonel". It all seems spooky. How can we touch base with each other. Who is in that picture with the name "Luther". Thank you for your help with this. The memorial service was unforgettable. My husband and I were so honored to be there and share this with all who attended. These men and their dogs are honored forever, as it should be. Many thanks to the Bennet's and all those who made this possible and make our nation aware of their responsiblities in honoring those who risk and lose lives to protect us all. The heart breaking tragedy is the dogs were left behind and the handlers live with this wound within their heart forever.

Comments = Don't know where to begin, but I'm feeling sad, sad because I watched the documentary about the War Dogs. I've been crying ever since and can't get it out of my mind. I never knew that dogs were used in wars, and still are. Never knew that they were put to sleep when they served out their time. How could your government leave those beautiful creatures behind? How? You don't put people to sleep when they retire, so why dogs? Why if they are still very much alive and deserve a well earned retirement? I've been busy trying to get this under attention of my friends and I will not stop doing this. I also linked this site to my own, so people will know. I've contacted one of the handlers just so I can understand what went on in the Vietnam and Korean wars. It is really mindblowing to me. I want to help in anyway possible. I just hope the legislation of your country will change and let dogs that served their time live on to grow old with someone they love, like their handler. Something has to be done and quickly. They deserve to be treated with love and respect unconditionally, because that is what they give us, no matter what color or religion we have.
Also wish that people would stop making wars so that innocent creatures, like dogs and people do not have to die. If anybody wants to write me, please do, nad help me to understand why this has happened, why they left the dogs behind... Hugs, Nancy B

My thoughts go to those handlers (whom I will never know) and hope that one day they can be re- united with their beloved partner. It will be one film I will never forget.I must add, what a discraceful act, by the US Government in the treatment of those unique dog and handler teams, who saved so many lives. If dog teams had not been deployed in Vietnam, one wonders if the outcome of the war would have been different!

I spent just over a year with Julian, who had already been there for two years. He was great company in terrible times and I learnt to watch his head so carefully to keep me out of the shit. The biggest problem was when it happened and the rounds were flying he wanted to bark and attack and draw attention to me. I wish he could have come home. Comments = I have wanted to see the film "WAR DOGS" ever since I left Korea in 98 and due to being overseas I haven't yet. Now that I am in Germany, I again tried to seek out the film, when one day my Kennelmaster informed me, after "G.I.ing" the kennels, that there was a great documentory on AFN tonight. When it finally came on I was shocked that it was "War Dogs" and as I watched this film...there are no words to express the feelings I went through as I watched...I revere the Vietnam Dog Teams for their dedication. I wish to extend my hand to you and your partners and pray this never happens again. Thank you, amillion times, thank you

The Unknown Hero
In Dedication to the War Dogs
Running through the grass
And across the fields
The patron stops
The squadron yields
The dog sniffs something
It’s a familiar odour
He lets out a bark
The squadron leads the tanks over.
This was the crucial process
That was used in the war
When the dog smelled a bomb
He’d let out a roar
These brave little hounds
Saved thousands of souls
They helped our country
Reach its goals
PEACE
After the war our brave little helpers
Were put in to eternal sleep
But I will not silence
The honourable title that they keep
I’ve researched in books and documentaries and I assure you that all of this information is true. Trained dogs were used in the war to sniff out bombs. With the use of these war dogs, bomb squads could locate the bombs and successfully remove them. This process was believed to save hundreds of thousands of lives. After the war these dogs did not receive any gratitude for their accomplishments. Instead, they were forgotten. I write to you this poem in hopes that during our traditional moment of silence on Remembrance Day, you also remember the unsung heroes that did their part in the war. The War Dogs.
Thank you for your attention. I hope this has changed your view about the war so that you will remember all the patrons of our country this Remembrance Day.

Comments = I do not have a story to tell and I am sorry for using this to contact you by
but I had to say something. I entered this site by mere chance. I was actually looking for a War Dog and Handler to do a Biography on. I thought it would be clever and a tad bit witty to turn in a Biography on an American. Even though it was a dog. But I like dogs more than people anyway. ( I have four ) Well I started to read the stories and look at the dates of these dogs lives. I was both moved and appalled. One maybe two years of service. And then to leave them after such diligent work. I was in tears. I just want to say thank you to all the dogs and handlers that risked all and made it possible to be where we are today. You are tremendous asset to our armed services. Thank you again. And I will never forget what I say today. And that is one step towards immortality for the brave. Thank you. Jenny

Major had a nick out of his left ear that legend said came from a bullet injury. Though a little old and tired, Major and I captured several felons on base and confiscated countless amounts of narcotics on several bases and ships in Hawaii. Comments = with all respects; i was too young to serve in VIETNAM; however after watching this show; i was totally appalled and heartbroken by our governments attitude towards these animals. All they did was to do what they were trained for only to be rewarded with death sentences! I can only imagine the anguish that the men that were handlers of these animals went through losing them in action or having to walk away from them. These animals deserved better; they did'nt complain; and because of them; there were that many more happy homecomings. I am disapointed that it took me this long to respond; my donation is forthcoming!!!!

Comments = I served in Lodges Fld. Azores, and Pease AFB NH., with Joe who I can never forget he was my best friend and was not my first dog. Joe was a Explosives Detector/Patrol large pure breed and good at what he did. I Lost my first dog Baron in the Azores while on patrol, Baron was another Large German Shepherd narcotics/patrol and was like I lost a family member when he died. The mission must go on and Baron's replacement Sport a mid size Black Lab wild, strong and hell on wheels durring a burglary one night kept me safe and apprehended two perpertraitors. These Dogs and many more I will never forget along with their handlers. I pay my Respect to those who died and served before me and left me a legacy that I have been proud to have been a part of.

Comments = I managed to avoid service in Viet Nam and suffer survivor's remorse to this day. Having the privilege of attending OCS out of the enlisted ranks and, after lengthy internal turmoil, ultimately resigning my commission in protest of the Viet Nam war, I greeted my Parris Island buddies as they came back with death in their eyes and grief in their hearts. Many did not come back but those that did made certain to assure me that I made the best decision I possibly could. It was a meat grinder over their and the powers that be had no intention of winning that war. The only victory was getting home. Those who were proud to have served and helped save some of their pals have all my respect. You are the true heroes, victims as pawns of the politicians and big business. Coming from a long line of patriots who served in both World Wars, I thought Viet Nam was going to be the same. How wrong I was. I could only cry my eyes out viewing the War Dogs video and curse the barbarians that sent those noble, loyal friends into harms way. If men must make war, let there be no innocents, either two or four-legged, cast into the quagmire.  The memorial should be constructed right in front  of the existing Veterans memorial in DC for all to see and be reminded of the crime of war and the attitudes that sent the prime of our youth and their loving friends to their deaths and dismemberment. Whoever mandated the dogs stay in Nam should be MADE TO PAY. They are not equipment but gifts from God and should be regarded as such. Mentality such as this is what causes war in the first place. Thank you for making us aware of the plight of these wonderful companions. Let us become a force that will never allow it to happen again. I shall shower all the more love on my two dogs in memory of those lost in that useless conflict.

Comments = I was stationed in Cam Ranh Bay and Ban Me Thuot during 69-70. Most of the people I served with went to MP School in Fort Gordon Georgia, where we were introduced to the Sentry Dog Program. Once we signed up we went to Okinawa for the training and our dog assignment. Most of my tour was in Ban Me Thuot providing security for helicopters and spotter planes. Would be anxious to hear from anyone serving there.

Comments = There has been a book recently published in Australia..it is written by a journalist who was a soldier (army) during the Vietnam War he had his own special dog...called "Caesar" black cross labrador.. he also worked with the Americans in Nam...Caesar was a tracker dog...and the author tells sad and funny situations apart from what a joke the Vietnam War was...& the total chaos in Vietnam...he mentions his disgust at meeting a dog that was trained by the Americans to be purely an attack dog..it was so savage no one could get near it...it was only one of many dogs to be trained as a killer...this disappointed him...
as dogs are supposed to be "mans best friend" not to be trained "killers". I was watching an American programme on TV & the woman being interviewed was terribly upset..she said the truth has not been told about the American War Dogs... in Vietnam...they were executed..not allowed back in the US>>>can you let me know if you want name of the book it will make you laugh & cry & disgust you at how the Governments use young men as fodder...all Governments not just Australia & US

Comments = I served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. Cam Rahn Bay, RVN, Phan Rang, RVN and in Udorn Thailand in 69/70. This is about my comrade and partner, Ace, not about me. I loved him beyond any comprehension nor  understanding of the common man. He was my friend, my companion and my loyal partner, during thick and thin. The cost of this friendship was a lot, for I never went home, it cost me a family, wife and kids, seemed worth it at the time, as they along with "Jody" got all the alloted pay and benefits of the family life, I got ole Ace, the better of the deal. We served together many many 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week, one day off every 30 days, and he was always there, no complaints, always that "Its OK, we'll get thru this partner, you and me, we'll make it" He was usually cold, wet, shivering, mosquitos enough for all to go around, no complaints, always there with that muzzle nudge, leaning up against me, the small scratch on the ear,or a couple pats on the shoulder were "PAID IN FULL", enough said. It isn't about me, its about the dogs. Its not about what I did, its about them, the Sentry, Scout and LRP and Wire/mine/tunnel detection dogs, and their selfless sacrafices. I can only hope that when I meet up with ole Ace again, I draw the perimeter post on the boundry lines of hell, to hold back the harpies of hell from entering heaven, forever on my post of eternity, as a dog handler, walking the walk, with ole "ACE" I could do worse for Hell, could draw a post in Hell, been there, married to Jane Fonda, and become a billionaire instead of a dog handler.

Comments = I have been spending quite a bit of time reading about the heroic experiences and relationships of Handler and Dog in Vietnam. I spent the last years of the war in the Navy floating in the Tonkin Gulf aboard the USS Hancock (CV-19). Little did I know of the War Dogs. Reading the stories of you men and your dogs gripped my heart. I grew up with my German Shepherd Rommel and can identify the devotion these dogs have. I have never had a bond with a dog like I had with him. I can’t imagine in the life and death you experienced, what the bond between you and your dog was like. It saddens me deeply to find out the number of dogs put down or abandoned over there at the end of the war. I cry at the thought and am thoroughly disgusted with the ignorance and the callousness of the US Government. So I want to express my deepest thanks and gratitude to you and your dogs, and to pass on a “Job Well Done”. Others made it home because of you. This weekend I am going to the War Dog Memorial at March AFB to see it for the first time. I will say my peace with God and ask for his loving embrace over the souls of the handlers canine hero’s who gave their lives and those left behind. For you who made it back, again thank you for your sacrifice. Be assured that this Sailor will “NEVER FORGET” you and your dogs. God Bless you all.

Comments = In looking up innformation about Iwo Jima I ran across a poignant picture of a man and his War dog. I had never heard of war dogs before. I found your site next and was amazed at the stories behind this special platoon. I am appalled that they left the dogs behind in Vietnam. My applause and appreciation go out to the War Dogs and their handlers!

Police Sqn quarding Tankers and B-52's.While walking my post I noticed these dogs walking the outer perimeter behind me and I struck up a conversation with the dog handler. to make a long story short I volunteered for K-9 got accepted and started training with Smokey we went through extensive training and were a working team. Smokey was my best friend and companion during the sub-zero temperture and lonely nights on patrol. When I got orders for Vietnam to the 35th Security Police in Phang Rang I didn't get to take Smokey with me he was retrained with another handler. But to this day I always think about him and remember all the good times we had together and I know he is in heaven still watching over me. Love you Smoke Your Best Friend Ray
