Comments = Hello Guys,
I am a South African war vet. I now live in Austaralia. I saw the programme on the War Dogs tonight on the Discovery programme. It brought back a lot of memories for me. Amazing! Thank you. Keep on making the people remember. Like you say there are Dads and Brothers and Sons who are here today because of the Men and their Dogs. In our War the Men and their Dogs have gone even more forgotten. My thoughts, wishes and solidarity are with all you guys. Mike.

Comments = I was in VN 66-67, stationed just below hill 327 outside of DaNang just down the road from the scout/sentry dogs. We had to walk by their area on the way to 7th Motors messhall. Sometimes I would stop and watch as the handlers put their dogs through their drills. It was very impressive to see. You could tell the dogs were loyal,intelligent,obedient and beautiful. I can truly understand how these handlers felt a great loss when their tour was up and they had to leave country without their loyal companion. As a lot of you know, whether it be two legged or four legged, when we rotated back to the land of the round-eye we felt a sense of loss (and maybe guilt) regarding our buddies that we left behind. But to find out that your four legged ones were just tossed aside by good ol' Uncle Sam must have been heart breaking. Especially when you found out 30 years later ON TELEVISION! My sheperd (Killer)was one of the best friends I ever had. He passed several years ago and sometimes it still brings a tear. I know how you feel. Your Dogs of War are truly forgotten heroes.

Comments = I request 'dog training' while at Ft. Gordon MP school. Went to Okinawa, then on to Long Bhin (212th MP Dog Co). Reassigned to a 'Hawk' site in Nha Trang and lived on 'Hawk hill' with our dogs, guarding the perimeter. I'm certain that our dogs prevented VC attacks on the site, since the only thing we did encounter were mortars from time to time. Dog alerts were dealt with using heavy fire-power from various bunkers. Left my dog in Viet-nam and stayed in the service for twenty years, retiring as a CW3.

I have been a handler since the summer of 1998 when the Air Force combined the Law Enforcement/Security carreer fields. Although I have never served in a hostile environment (as a handler)I have come to know the value of our devoted four-legged friends. Nancy and Bessy were more than the "equipment" that some would label them. To me, just knowing they were at my side during every incident from traffic stops to assault calls to alarm responses at the Weapon Storage Area, gave me the added peace of mind to help me resolve what ever was at hand professionally and peacefully. I have grown as a person having served with these dogs and will miss them dearly. Keep up the good work and best of luck to all handlers and working dogs past, present, and future!!!

Comments = The conclusion to the Viet Nam War Dog story is heart-breaking. Mark Twain once said there is one major difference between a man and a dog. If you feed a starving dog, he will not bite you.
The despicable mentality of whatever 'Nam-era flunky abandoned those dogs is typical of those in charge in that time and place. Maybe they had a goofy idea that dogs are like sparrows or something, that left to their own devices "Nature" would take care of them. Unfortunately that idea is acted out today by ordinary people. The shelters are full of the results of that opinion and the rescue groups are overwhelmed by them. Hopefully there will be a law preventing the military from doing that again and maybe there will be a fitting monument someday for these dogs. One kind of living memorial would be to adopt an abandoned or rescued dog. One thing I do is raise dogs to be trained as assistance dogs for disabled children, vets and other adults. They are provided at no charge. There are 800 of us doing this in all fifty states. For more info see www.caninecompanions.org.

First, when I was little, it was scary. Then I began to understand.He told me that Angel had to stay in Vietnam because the government said they'd carry back disease.My dads in the Navy, so I know the mentality of the government by now.I want to tell you that every night,I dream of people realizing the true bravery, heroism,courage and partnership that was present in these dogs and their handlers. If not for them thousands more would be dead and we might not have came out on top.I wrote a story, based on notes and journals, about the war dogs, I am trying to get it published so more people will know what really happened to the hero's of the war. Its from the dogs point of view, the story is called "A Dog Named Hero". It has poems I've wrote for them and numerous quotes that seem appropriate. My friends and I, on the base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, made a little memorial for angel. We also took care of the grave of a "Sgt. Tanker" a dog, killed in the line of duty. So I hope if you can give me anymore useful information I would be most grateful. Please don't just write me off as a kid, this means alot to me as I'm sure it would to you. With the upmost respect to all of you that represented us. You will never be forgotten in the peoples hearts which you have touched.

Comments = Dear Sirs,
I am Collections Assistant at the St. Louis County Historical Society and we have just had the honor of making public our own Website honoring our local veterans (www.vets-hall.org). In the process of looking up info on Veterans of Vietnam I discovered your excellent website dedicated to those brave animals and the men that they guarded. I have yet to find anyone in this area who was directly involved with Wardogs but have not given up my search. I believe this would make an excellent addition or tribute on our website. Within our guidelines the veteran must be from Northeast Minnesota. If you have a way of getting in touch with someone who was originally from this area or even lived here a brief amount of time that we could feature on our website and perhaps eventually in our in-house Veteran's Memorial Hall that would be GREAT! Thanks for your time.

Comments = After seeing the story in Parade Magazine about war dogs and now finding this site on the internet, I'm compelled to write the story of my experience in Nam with my partner, "Devil". Any of you guys that were in country during 1972 and 1973 might have heard of us as "Echo 7". Anyways it goes like this;
In 1971, myself and another trainer, who had previously served in Viet Nam, trained a dog named Devil. Devil was a pure black shepherd. He was gifted with a super nose and loved to track. He was also very, very intelligent. We decided to train him to be the perfect scout/track/detection dog for the conditions the soldiers were facing in Nam. I won't go into our training techniques, but the end results were way beyond our expectations. Devil could detect trip wires, mines, spider holes, tunnels, personnel and could track like a Bloodhound. But his most important skill was the fact that he could work alone. We would let him work up to 300 meters out. He would report back to me by lying down in front of me if he didn't find anything and sitting in front of me if he did find something. If he didn't find anything we would move up another 300 meters and turn him loose again. If he found something we would leash him and he would lead us to it. A wire or mine, he would sit in front of it. If he detected personnel he would lie down approx. 100 meters out. He was taught never to bark and to advoid detection. He would slip around the bush like a cat stalking it's prey.He was a natural. We all figured he was a reincarnated Green Beret. Anyways, we tried to turn him over to several army handlers but he wouldn't work for them. He would only work for me. We put on a demonstration for the Dept. Of Defense, the Army, and the Marine Corp brass. Needless to say they were all very impressed. It was decided that I woud work for the Dept. of Defense and take Devil to Nam. Basically they would assign me to whoever needed me. I arrived in Nam in Jan 1972. Devil and I were assigned to a elite team of Special Forces. These guy's were all on their 2nd and 3rd tours in Nam. We were assigned to mostly the project missions, rescue operations and recon. We operated in mostly Loas and Cambodia. We wore no rank or insignias. We all carried foreign weapons. In all I received (but of course they all should have gone to Devil) 14 medals, including the DSC (Army Distinguised Service Cross, second only to the Medal Of Honor),3 Silver Stars, 2 Bronze Stars, DOD Distinguised Service Medal, Army Soldiers Medal Of Valor, Joint Service Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, 2 Viet Nam cross of Gallantry Medals and the Purple Heart. We were told that Devil and I were unoffically the most highly decorated K-9 team in military history. After 22 months in country in Oct. of 1973 Devil was killed and I was wounded by morter fire during a rescue operation. During all that time our team only had 2 KIA's and 3 WIA's. But, without Devils guidance, my entire team was killed a month after Devil was killed and I had left Viet Nam, by a VC ambush. I can't tell you how many times Devil lead us around ambushes. I could fill a book telling the times he saved our lives or the lives of downed air crews he saved by leading us to them and then leading us back out. Or the captured personnel he tracked so we could free them. The NVA placed a high bounty on Devil so he never stayed in a kennel for fear of sappers. He also never saw a base vet in Nam. The vet's used local nationals to aid them and the DOD didn't trust them. So they saw to it that I had any innoculations or medication I needed. I was sorry that I never got to have the comradeship of other dog handlers. I would pass them sometimes as we were boarding a chopper and I would hear them asking "who is that?". We'd be in our tiger stripe fatigues and carring AK 47's. We were always operating covertly so I wasn't allowed the privlege of talking to other handlers. I sometimes wish Devil and I didn't perform in all those project missions so Devil could have received the recognition he deserved. But, then again I think of all the people he saved and I know he wouldn't have had it anyother way.

Comments = Was surfing the net, looking for K-9 sites; ended up reading the Contact Posts. Never served in 'Nam, but knew a lot of good people who did. As I am a former handler, I understand the bond between a man and his dog - the one was always ready to make the ultimate sacrifice for the other. I was at Clark during Operation Homecoming, and was greatly moved by the return of our POWs; however, I am just as greatly disturbed by the fact that our K-9 brethren were not ALLOWED to return home at the end of the war. To all the guys who made it back - God Bless You! To all the guys who didn't - Rest In Peace. To all the dogs - someday we'll walk a post together again.

Comments = I was a K-9 handler for five of the eight years I was on active duty. I volunteered for K-9 school at Lackland 72-73 to escape my first Security Police assignment that was to be Shimea?, Alaska. I spent the next several weeks at Medina with "Duke" a former scout dog. He could throw some 200 plus yard alerts when the conditions were right and he trained me to "read" his alerts. Then I got shipped to 92nd SPS at Fairchild AFB 73 in Washington State where I was assigned "Thunder" a long legged Shepard/Husky mix that could put his front paws on my shoulders and look me right in the eyes. Next I went to the 8th SPS at Ubon RTAFB Thailand 73-74 and was assigned to "Prinz" a wiry little black and brown shepard. That dog alerted really great on snakes by hopping left or right about three feet if he got near one and I would hop double that distance once he got me trained. Next stop was Seymour-Johnson AFB in North Carolina 74-76 where I was first assigned "Norman" a good old patrol dog but as soon as I could I took over a psychotic shepard named "Rex". Now this was a dog with attitude as he tried to eat me twice while I handled him. He was also good at attempting to give other people nips so I had to be watching all the time. We went to Drug Detection school in Lackland where he managed to get a piece of an Army E-6 named Stuckey. The wallet in his back pocket saved me and him. When Stuckey dropped his drawers to check we found two puncture wounds above the wallet and two below the wallet, Rex would have literally had a chunk of him. My next assignment was to Ramstein AFB 76-79 where I picked up "Sam" also known as Stinky Sam. I just couldn't keep him clean. He was the best Drug dog I ever handled. As a matter of fact I used to use his stool as a supplement for hash when I found it in common areas of barracks and would have loved to been a fly on the wall when the dopers smoked that. My K-9 days ended in Germany when they put "Sam" down for excessive hip displacia. All my dogs were great. I worked with them and they worked with me, their personalities were comical at times to down right deadly during attack work. Those were great times filled with cameraderie that I haven't experienced since leaving those K-9 units, but such is life and the reality of moving on.

Comments = I was not in Viet Nam nor did I serve in the military. I'm currently a Deputy Sheriff for San Diego County and have worked as a K-9 Handler for the last 9 1/2 yrs. I remember as a child growing up, watching the news footage of the war, which had basically been going on my entire young life. I remember hearing about the you men who had to fight and even at the young age of 8 or 9, thinking that the war would continue and I would have to go over and fight when I turned 18. That had a major impact on my life and to this day, the war holds a great respect and interest to me. I saw the "War Dogs" movie when it first was aired and remember thinking how I would have felt had I been in that situation. I worked my first patrol dog, Baron, for about 5 yrs and was grief stricken when I had to put him down Oct. of 2000. He was just two months shy of 15 yrs old. I feels for those of you who served, whether you worked a dog or not, and wish I could thank
each and every one of you in person. I've been to The Wall and hope visit the memorials that have been made to honor the handlers and the dogs who served during the war. Thanks to you all and may God bless and keep all of you.

Comments = I have never been in the military (although my father has been a Marine for 21 years and was in Vietnam.) I am, however, a human being and a dog lover from the depths of my soul. The documentary on these brave, angelic war dogs changed my life. Whenever I feel like feeling sorry for myself,
I think about the ultimate sacrifice and unconditional love of those dogs. Humans may be  mentally "superior" to dogs, but dogs are eons ahead of us in the spiritual world. Those dogs are my heroes and role models. I pray that one day I can be as loving, forgiving, and brave. I hope I will meet them all one day when I pass over to the other side. Much thanks to all dogs for loving us like we cannot love ourselves.

Comments = I am only a civilian and I was just a kid during Vietnam, but having a brother old enough to go brought it closer to home. I remember those intense feelings.... Last night I watched the documentar on War Dogs and their handlers. I cried the whole time...in fact I am still weepy. The stories the soldiers told were both amazing and sad...they touched me very deeply. I am so glad that the dogs and their handlers are being recognized and honored. I have a deep appreciation for those who served/serve our country and I thank you for your sacrifices, bravery and the willingness to share your story. May your Memorial Day bring you peace.

I am beginning a project to have a war dog memorial constructed here in Huntington, NY, with the help of kids at school! They were very affected by the show! Most saw it on ANIMAL PLANET in May of 2001. The nest nite the movie RAIN was shown. I plan to show both to my classes! God Bless those dogs and their handlers!!! Any help with our project would be appreciated!

I read an article recently regarding the fate of war dogs left behind after the war;I was shocked and saddened to learn the gov.left them behind to die.Also,I am APPALLED that the U.S. refuses to honor their memory in Arlington,not even a tree!!! I have been looking up websites,trying to find any info on how to pursue the push for a Washington memorial,which these brave,devoted dogs deserve.

Comments = Sorry, I don't know where else to leave a message. I just want to very humbly say thank you with love and gratitude for the Viet Nam handlers and their dogs for all that they gave of themselves during the Viet Nam War. I was just a mid-west teenage girl during this time and was very nieve about what was happening. Until "War Dogs" and "Rain" was shown last night on animal planet, I didn't know that those wonderful dogs were just abandoned in Viet Nam. I know there has to be a special place in Heaven for them and I pray God will let me be their caregiver as my heart is just broken for what happened to them here on earth. I do not understand how our government could have commanded that they just be left there like trash after they helped save over 10,000 of our soldiers lives! I just want the US Government, Veterans, and everyone else I'll be communicating with that GOD loves these Wonderfully Brave Dogs and so do I. With Heartfelt Sincerity. cheroe@qwest.net

Comments = I have no service information because I was not able to serve. I wish I had been able. I am very close to the dogs  I have had, and there are few words which can describe the relationship we shared. So I can only imagine the pain of the handlers when they had to leave their companions behind. And this leads me to the focus, which is a question... Has there been any change in the position of the military that the dogs are essentially equipment? If not, is there any action pending or in process to assert pressure on congress to change that position? I would like to see the dogs officially viewed as an animal recruit. It is in this way that the dog could receive a proper honorable discharge and be available to go into quarantine (if serving overseas) until release to their handler and his or her family.

I cry tears of sorrow for the equipment that you all loved and trusted. I hope that in the future war dogs won't be in that catagory. I hope legislation will be that dogs will be clasified as enlisted men. Does anyone know of their fate? I thank god that these dogs were loved by all who served with them.Thank you little buddies you are greatly missed by all. My love and appreciation goes out to the equipment.

The students didn't know about the dogs and learned so much from doing the project. Their compassion and patriotism shows in their site. Out of 20 years service in USAF (4yrs) and USN (16) years, now I'm retired/disabled, the only job I throughly enjoyed was handling dogs. Sarge and Blackie saved my rear end more than a few times. I wish that I could have brought them back home when I caught that Freedom Bird. Loved "War Dogs", but I cried for hours, and still do whenever I think of what happened to my close friends at the end of the war.  It broke my heart to hear what the military did with them. It was not only a dishonor to them, but to all my brothers, the dog handlers in Thailand and Vietnam. I still have a deep love for all the dogs I ever handled and knew. I still miss all of them to this day. They were brave soldiers to the end, and they will always live in my heart and forever have my love and gratitude.  "The more I see of people, the better I like my dog!" Wooff! Comments = This is dedicated to all the Military Working Dogs and their handlers in Vietnam and Thailand during the Vietnam Conflict. There were 261 K-9 handlers and 500 Military Working Dogs killed in action in Vietnam/Thailand during that war. It's estimated that the actions of all K-9's and their handlers during the war saved over 10,000 additional casualties. At the end of the war, 190 dogs were shipped from Thailand to Germany. The other over 4,000 dogs the military considered excess property and useless equipment and were put to sleep. These brave dogs were solders, warriors, and were feeling, caring creatures. The deserved to be brought home to a hero’s welcome. Their final fate was not what they deserved. Please pray for all their souls.  This is from the bottom of my heart and soul!

Trust
In the beginning, we were wary of each other. I didn’t know you and you didn’t know me. I was even a little bit scared of you, and I didn’t know if you would be mean or kind to me. Your kind is so unpredictable. But as we got to know each other, I learned to trust you, honor you, respect you, obey you and even love you. As well as I can understand it; my sole purpose in life is to please you. It’s what I live for. I’ve never asked for much in return from you. All I need is the basics that any of my brothers and sisters ask for. Just a warm, dry place to sleep, food and water for my growing body, love for my soul, lots of encouragement for my mind and ego, and a best friend when I need one, for even I have my melancholy moments when I’m sad, lonely, frightened, scared or confused. You make me feel complete when you give me love and comfort me. In return for giving me the basics that anyone could ask for, I will give you more love than you can handle. I will protect you and gladly give my life so that you may live. I will warn you when there is danger, and be there whenever you need a best friend to talk to. I may not be able to speak your language, but I will let you know how I feel in many other ways. I will give you joy when you are sad, a friend when you are lonely, laughs when you need them, warmth on cold nights. I will do funny things and tricks to keep you amused and to pass the time. I will obey your every command and wish for you are also my best friend. I know that there are times when I will act bad and do something that you do not approve of. All I ask is that you let me know I've done wrong, and be gentle with me, and I’ll try and not let it happen again. I can’t help that I make mistakes, but please don’t yell at me, or ever hit me. Best friends don’t do that to each other. I want you to respect me as much as I respect you. We have a bond, you and I that should never be broken. Our love for each other will endure long past the time when I am old and broken, and I must leave you. You are my life, my heart and my soul. You are my everything, and I depend on you for so much. Without you, I am lost, I am sad, I am confused, and I am worth nothing. I live for you to love me, tell me words of encouragement, play with me, and give me walks and exercise. I love for you to teach me new tricks, and I even love to teach you a few. The moments that you are away from me are like hours, and the hours like days. Even if you are away from me for only a few minutes, it seems like an eternity to me. That is why I am so happy to see you whenever you come back to me. You and I have given each other the most precious gifts that anyone could give each other. We have given each other our trust, and have exchanged the responsibility for each other’s lives. I always want your trust, and will do anything to keep it. I hope and pray that I will always have yours! And one day when I am gone from this world, I will wait for you in heaven. You will recognize me right off, I will be the one who is smiling and wagging my tail with excitement. I am your loyal dog, and will always be your best friend.

I literally sob with heartbreak and rage at such betrayal after all you've given! I never imagined I could feel such a sense of pain and loss through your experiences, yet those are the very feelings that make us caring, empathetic human beings! If I didn't have those feelings, then I wouldn't be alive...I will never know how it feels to be afraid for my life in a strange country, not knowing when my next breath would be my last...but I TRY and imagine how you must have felt, and emotion over whelmes me. Hurray that you are finally getting the recognition and thanks you deserve! Your blood, sweat, and tears were and are NOT shed in vain! God Bless every one of you and your four legged "angels"..you are NOT forgotten!

Comments = I was not in Vietnam, but have many loved ones who were. Have just recently viewed War Dogs. Had NO IDEA of the "reward" that was bestowed upon those veteran dogs. Is anything being done to find those "esteemed leaders" which broke the cardinal rule: NO ONE GETS LEFT BEHIND! Those decision making individuals MUST be held accountable.
What about those civilians who never dreamt that they needn't fear the enemy, but their own government for their dog's demise? It makes me physically ill. I think a follow up documentary is in order. One that makes sure that this kind of abandonment/slaughter NEVER happens again. Anybody got anything in the works? I would be interested in helping; research, casting, (letting THEM go loose in enemy territory) etc.
Thank you for your attention.

Comments = I just want to take a minute to thank all of the MWD's who have given their lives to watch out for and even save many many lives. I never knew anything about MWD's until I met my husband. He is a handler for the AF. I have grown close to all of the dogs here at Hill AFB, UT. When I get a chance to see his dog, Toby, I just want to bend down and kiss her. Everytime my husband has had to go overseas, search buildings for important people, or to a bomb threat Toby has made sure he comes back to me and our son. The kennel master, trainer, and all the handlers are rasing money for the MWD's here at Hill who "retire". Since we have been here (2 1/2 yrs) I have seen two of the dogs "retire" and I cried along with all the others who knew them. I don't know if anyone reads the "Airfrce Times" or not but a while ago there was an article in there about handlers being allowed to adopt the MWD's who "retire". We spoke to the old trainer about adopting one here who was retiring and she said it was all bogus. If anyone has been allowed to or has any information about adopting (whether or not it's true) these wonderful animals, please get in touch with me. I think the MWD's should get to live out there last days or years in a loving home. I too watched War Dogs. As a matter of fact I own it. We have shown it to many of men and women since we've had it and I don't think a one had a dry eye afterwards (even me). I have donated money to the memorial and I will continue to. Comments = I trained my first K-9, Smokey, at Showa, Japan in 1966 and took him to Clark Air Base where he died four months later. I was reassigned Jill, a little spitfire bitch who loved to attack viciously and highly protective. She frequently bit through the sleeve and suit. We made our contributions of apprehensions at Clarks perimeters. Never had a concern about the dark with her at my side. I went to Lakenheath and there from 68 - 70 working Airdog Kim. With him as my partner we won the 69 and 70 Military Working Dog Trials which consisted of two dog handlers from each American base competing against each other. The winner went on to compete against the British Military Dog Handlers for honor of the number one dog team in England. It was quite an honor. Big difference between the Southeast Asian K-9's and Englands. Never stayed with the K-9's after the military but maintained a pretty solid career in law enforcement. The Tech did not have the heart to do the dirty deed so he made Rigger his roommate. When we took Rigger with us and started training with him, he responded whole heartedly and turned out to be a great dog, companion, and soldier. I am a current serving member in the Royal Australian Air Force and have been for almost 24 years, yeh still going strong. I am an aircraft maintainer, currently in Recruiting getting new personnel for the Australian Defense Force. I watched your War Dogs documentary for the 3rd time on Discovery. Always brings lots of emotions to the front!! This is the first time I have looked at the web sit, excellent!! Great to see that the Dogs finally got remembered at the memorials and I bet that the Handlers are really happy that their mates have been recognized with the honors that they deserve. I have never seen full front line service but have heaps of years on CH-47C Chinooks and 'B, D and H' model Hueys where we inserted the Air Force Military dogs on exercise. It has always astounded me the close working relationship that the Handler/Dog have with each other. Just a line to say, keep up the good work and to the ex-handlers who made this, great work guys and the Dogs are legends!!!!
Cheers Phil Mackie

The dogs named above are current members of my family. After viewing this program on the Animal Planet Channel twice, I was appalled by my governments cavalier disregard for the services rendered by these gallant canine soldiers. It is inconceivable to me that these valiant, living, breathing, FEELING creatures could possibly be considered 'equipment' to be disposed of like pieces of cold metal! How your hearts must ache for your four-footed comrades in arms!!! PLEASE accept my condolences for your losses and, PLEASE accept my sincere gratitude for protecting me and mine! May God keep all of you safely in the palms of His hands.

Comments = I was not in Vietnam but last night here on the National Geographic channel they had the documentary 'War Dogs'. The dogs were very brave and I was very sad to hear that they were left to die in Vietnam. They had every right to be taken back to the States and to be given the treatments that they required. They deserved to be treated as soldiers. I hope that schools across the States educate the children about the brave dogs. It was mentioned in the documentary that there was no memorial but I am pleased that after searching the net for more information I saw that 2 memorials have been erected to honor their memory.

Comments = I'm not a veteran and my experience goes back to just after WWII when my Daddy took us back to Hawaii where he'd spent most of the war as an intelligence radio petty officer. We lived next door to Mr and Mrs Mo. Mr Mo owned Rusty and had been his handler thru the war. I was 5 years old and loved that dog. He went everywhere I went. He took me to the bus stop to catch the bus for school and he was there in the afternoon to walk me back home. No one could touch me unless it was all right with Rusty and no one could come into the yard. He never bit, he "held" with his mouth and he always barked a warning first. Once a would-be burglar entered the yard and Rusty chased him atop the wrought iron fence then opened the gate and kept him there until the police arrived. Another time he popped every button on the front of a woman's dress because she didn't stop when he told her. He bit hold of the back of her dress and held - she moved! The only thing Rusty was afraid of was thunder, an infrequent occurence in Honolulu. The only time I remember that happening in the 2 1/2 years we lived there, he came and got in bed with me. Because of my memories of Rusty - his intelligence and loyalty, I bought an Aussie when my daughter was small. She was with us for 13 years - just as smart and just as loyal tho' not as well trained.

Comments = Thank you for providing a link to my students' web site on war dogs. The site has been revised with my current eighth grade students web pages. This is an ongoing project that we will keep as long as possible. The students emailed veteran dog handlers, who responded to their questions and sent pictures. More veterans have agreed to participate. If there are any dog handlers that would like to participate in our project, please contact me through email. I will assign a two-member team to design a page honoring you and your dog. The students are very excited about this project and feel that they have participated in creating something very special to honor all veterans. I hope everyone will visit our site, which is mentioned on the Contact Post page near the bottom (click on the American flag). Thanks to all the veterans who have helped my students, and those that are continuing to help. And a special thank you, war-dogs.com site, for helping us tremendously!

Comments = I apologize in advance for putting a post here when I never served, much less had contact with a war dog. I did not recognize another way to make contact. I am a young musician who saw a discovery episode about these animals and their awesome actions. Being an animal lover in general and having a cat that feels like a child, I was moved to tears, something that seldom happens to me. The handlers' stories reached into my heart, and as with most things that reach me in such a way, I went to the music. I have started a song about these animals and my respect for them, my personal memorial if you will. I am seeking more inspiration for the rest of the piece. I would love to hear from anyone who feels passionately about the subject, especially veterans who were with them, regardless of which time period. I am very focused on creating something that conveys my respect and admiration for the animals that served. I would be happy to share with you what I have written so far, if this e-mail intrigues anyone. Thank you for your time, Eric Winkler.

Comments = I was 12 when my mom brought the groceries in the house. A can of tuna fell out of the bag and on to the floor.Our dog Muggys who was at the door to the living room and kithen, walked over and sniffed the can and proceeded to lick her nose. I said to my Dad, who was sitting at the kitchen table,that the dog was licking is nose. My Dad said,"He can smell right through the can. There sense of smell is 10 times better than ours." Seven years later with my draft number of 63, I'am sitting in the stands in Fort Gordon,GA at MP school and the SGT asked if any of us want to be dog handlers. In a split second I raised my hand. I knew I was Vietnam bound, but at that instant I'd figured it would be better spending it with something that had a sense of smell that was 10 times better than mine. My Dad had an 8 grade education, but in that one instance when I was 12, he was the smartest man on the face of the earth. Thanks Dad...

Comments = G'day everyone,
I have just watched War Dogs and as a current Military Working Dog Handler I can relate and understand all too well the emotions of working with Dogs. That you had to leave your mate behind is heartbreaking. To think they are considered "equipment" is disgraceful as they are a living, breathing creature. You just don't form a bond like that with a screwdriver or hammer as you do a dog, do you. Anyway some of you may be interested in a book printed here in Australia. It's called "TRACKERS" and is about Australian Army Tracker Dogs in Vietnam. While I have not read it yet myself, many in my line of work have and swear it's a good read (but not sure if it's available in the US or anywhere else). Anyway, I hope you achieve the goal for a memorial as the War Dog richly deserves one. Cheers.
