Comments = Hello Guys,
I am a South African war vet. I now live in Austaralia. I saw the program on the War Dogs tonight on the Discovery program. It brought back a lot of memories for me. Amazing! Thank you. Keep on making the people remember. Like you say there are Dads and Brothers and Sons who are here today because of the Men and their Dogs. In our War the Men and their Dogs have gone even more forgotten. My thoughts, wishes and solidarity are with all you guys. Mike.

Comments = I am from Christchurch New Zealand and today on the TV I saw the tragic story of the Vietnam War Dogs.
My partner served in the war for USA Airforce and was not aware that this tragedy occurred. He has many sad memories of his time in Vietnam but this story has saddened him and touched him deeply.
Thank you for bringing this story to the world and good luck for your future work.

Comments = I never served, but I've listened to veterans tell their stories. I've owned 4 German Shepherds, Nikka, Dutchase, Harley, and Mijo. I still have Mijo. I've always loved the documentary "War Dogs" and I'm glad to finally be able to buy it and take into my history teacher. We've spent the last marking period studing wars, not once has he mentioned dogs in the war. He don't even know anything about it, well now this documentary is going to teach him and I hope it will be a permanent lesson for years to come.

I have worked with sheps for over 25yrs and I would like to give you a picture of mine as a puppy! I am a veteran and retired police officer from Trenton,N.J. Police Dept! We have a memorial for fallen K9's here in Hamilton Twp, N.J..I would like to add your site to mine/Http:Lostinwebspace.com under my pets in main menu. A Good friend of mine,who was a handler/trainer in nam,committed suicide a few years ago and also my partner/police dept shot himself. I would like to dedicate Max's puppy picture to both of them and tell their stories! " The forgotten Ones! Love and Dedication" My Ashes Will Be Scattered With You! My Best Friend!" My daughter just graduated with a degree in journalism,and is writing a book about are loyal friends.I like her title. I hope my daughter can use stories here! Our Lt, called in a dog tracking team what i remember there was 5 men and 2 dogs seems like it was a black Lab and Germanshepard. But when the team got myself and 9 more of us went with the team. I walked point until just after we got accrose the river the the dog team went infront of me and we got ambushed it started with a booby trap going of one one of the trackers got shot in the leg.One of the dogs must have liked my Lt. because it got a hold of his boot and did not want to let go. We stayed and fought our asses off for almost a 1/2 hour when the Lt. said to pull out me and 2 other guys stayed until every one wasout of fire range, when we got tothe men they were just standing there, I yelled at the Lt to do some thing and he just stood there and some one yell some do something so i got the men accross the rive as i was in about the middle the man behind yell for help it was the track who got shot in leg, been thinking about that momentfor alot of years now I was really happy when I locked fingers with him and was able to get him accross that river. The Lt snaped out after that and sent me ahead to have them get stechers. The man I helped had me get his back pack and he gave me a big green like pouch he knows what was in it but I would like to get in touch with him or any of the others who fought with us that day if you would not have went in front of me when you did I would have been the one shot all I can do is say Thank you and for that moment in my life it will never leave me. Shit I remember the whole day, because shit started early for me that day. I sure hope some one can help me out with geting intouch with any of those good men thank you. Ken Sheren JR.

Comments = I am a civilian woman 25 and I have worked with animals for most of my life. I am a dog lover, and a few years ago my sister and I watched the war dogs documetary. Immediatly I went and bought the bag of dog food to get the video tape.(I did not have a dog at the time). A few months passed and I found a stray puppy sitting in the road. I took her home and cleaned her up to find her a good home. Something about her spirit bonded us. When I was sure that she was mine, I named her "Paper". That name holds so much honor. Well my little dog is not a war hero like her name but she has such a peaceful disposition that it fits well. I like that when I take her in public and people ask "What kind of name is Paper?" I have the opportunity to enlighten them. I believe that "Paper's" memory is honored each time I explain that name.

Comments = Just found this site. I have not seen the documentary about War Dogs,but I know first hand about the pain and loss of a friend. I left Hoss in Feb of 1968,but I have never forgotten him. I was at Bien Hoa during the Tet Offensive of 1968,and will never forget the night of Jan. 31st. I have been in touch with many of the handlers who were there when I was,and am looking forward to seeing some of them at the VDHA Reunion in St. Louis in October 2002. The handlers and dogs,deserved better than they received from the Government. God Bless every handler who spent time in Vietnam. Never forget the ones who gave their all in a war that has been over for a long time but will never be forgotten by those who served.

Comments = I live in NZ and have not served. I have just viewed the War Dogs Documentary on our National Geographic channel and felt disgusted and sick to the stomach how the vietman war dogs were just abandoned and discarded as "equipment". I have a gerham shepherd, and they are the most loyal, trustworthy, devoted friends anyone could have. My heart goes out the men and dogs who were seperated after the war. Thank you for sharing your stories on this documentary and via this website to let people know the truth of what happened. Through this knowledge the dogs will get the recognition and memorials they deserve. God Bless you all.

Comments = Like so many in my generation many friends served in Vietnam and are still coming to terms with the experience. I have just watched the documentary on War Dogs and I am saddened that such wonderful, loyal and heroic dogs were basically abandoned. There are many who owe their lives to them and I am glad that at last people are starting to learn of their role. Jennie Craven - Australia

Comments = Dear Sirs:
Is there an official Quartermaster registry of War Dogs? During the Vietnam War, I enlisted -- in Japan -- three of my dogs in the military, in answer to a call for war dogs. I read later in the Pacific Stars and Stripes (I think) about a white German Shepherd Dog named Rebel who had saved his handler's life. And, assuming there were not too many white German Shepherd Dogs with that name in Vietnam, I believe that dog was once our pet and the sire of other dogs who were part of our family. If anyone knows about a registry somewhere where we can check on Rebel and perhaps learn what eventually happened to him, it would be much appreciated. Perhaps his handler will read this letter.
Thank you very much.

On a trip to Guam some years ago, we sought it out and found it is well-kept and a fine tribute to the many dogs of WWII who helped flush out the enemy from caves on that Island. I'm sure you could get more information from sources on Guam.

Comments = My Daughter is doing a project on WAR DOGS for her 7th grade. We went to see the memorial at Fort Benning Ga. to get some pictures and information, we also toured the museum display. I must say it was OUTSTANDING!!!. The day we went the Viet Vet Memorial traveling wall was there and they were passing out small US flags, Many people were placing the flags in/on different Memorials that are located there. It was so good to see the War Dogs had just as many if not more than the others placed around the Memorial.
One Comment: It would be nice if a former handler that has time or is retired could give some of their time to be at the Special Exhibit in the museum to tell their story and answer any questions. Thanks for a job well done

Comments = The following Statement is in support of my claim and is submitted with VA form 21-4138. Edward Michael Valdez has written this statement on Monday, January 07, 2002. My claim # is C 28 753 493, and is a true and correct to the best of my knowledge.As a Military Working Dog Handler stationed in Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam 1969-1971, I was awarded 70ng my tour of duty at Cam Rahn Bay, Viet Nam, and my assigned sentry dog Arras, # unknown, during my tour of duty at Bitburg AFB, Germany 1971-1973.
All of the dogs assigned to me where not mere pets they were my best friends. Morgan, considered a weapon by the Department of Defense, was much more. He was an intellectual comrade and was responsible for the detection of enemy forces beyond the perimeters of Cam Rahn Bay Viet Nam where thousands of soldiers slept at night, while I was responsible for reporting those detections. Together we were a team that provided a physical and psychological deterrent against those attempting to penetrate those perimeters. At daybreak I would return Morgan to his kennel, feed, groom and see to his needs, as I was solely responsible for his welfare. Only after those duties were completed I would go to bed. My daily routine always included my dog, I would go to the kennels to retrieve Morgan and take him out for a run on the beach, a swim, teach him tricks, play and learn from him, we became the best of friends.
I cannot remember the exact day or even the month that it happened but I was told that Morgan had to be destroyed, his age had determined his fate. I thought that it was unjust because only a few nights before, Morgan had detected an enemy advance on the perimeter and was given accolades by our Flight Commander, Lieutenant Mack. I was told to report to the veterinarian with Morgan as he was scheduled for euthanasia the following day. Sick and grief stricken I had to take Morgan for his last run on the beach. When I returned to the kennel I was ordered to muzzle him and gave him the command to jump on the examining table, which he was familiar with as he usually expected a treat at the end of his exam. As many dog handlers had done before me I would now calm him as the needle slowly injected its green poison into his neck and silenced his last woof. My tears were uncontrollable as Morgan died in my arms. Even now as I write this I have to pause and I need to cry. I left the vet’s office when SSgt. Olmstead ordered me to go back in the examination room and watch the autopsy. I could not refuse, as I was given an order. It was kind of an initiation, I was later told by fellow dog handlers. Having to watch this final injustice and undignified act perpetrated on my best friend was brutal and traumatic. Too me it was even more traumatic than being witness to the death of Amerasian and Vietnamese children during a mission at an orphanage in Delat Vietnam of the same year. But this was not the only time I was involved in the killing of a friend as a direct consequence of being a military dog handler in the United States Air Force.
During my tour of duty in Bitburg AFB, Germany my sentry dog Arras suffered a similar fate. After his autopsy I was given the undignified task of taking his remains to an undignified place and ordered to do so. His remains where not taken to a cemetery to be given an honorable burial. Arras as well as two other military working dogs where taken to the dump to be cremated in the company of garbage. A little research of the veterinarian’s records can easily verify that this indecorous act was done.
During the last several years I have come to realize that the trauma of these events have significantly altered my life style and continue to contribute to my anxiety disorder. I cannot function normally in a society where I am constantly reminded of those experiences every time I meet a person with a dog. I continue to have nightmares of those traumatic events and have given every effort to try to control the repetitive outburst of anger they trigger in my daily routine. I feel very uncomfortable when talking about those events and I am drowning in guilt directly and indirectly associated with those events. Although, I continue to seek counseling, therapy, and medical treatment for my condition I see no immediate remedy. I am however, seeking solutions for my condition that include sleep deprivation, depression and anxiety. I am in treatment at the PTSD outpatient clinic, American Lake in Tacoma, and the Seattle VA Hospital in Washington.
My prognosis for PTSD continues and at a much higher level. Please consider these new statements in support of my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder when determining a new percentage of service connection regarding my claim.
I am also seeking a higher rate of compensation related to my left ankle as I am experiencing more pain that has become unbearable at times during my daily routine.

I'm the "mom" of 3 shephards, 1 a police dog. My heart goes out to all of you vets who lost your buddies, both fury and human. You did what most people today wouldn't. Just know that your dogs crossed the Rainbow Bridge and are looking after you to this day! :) Thank you all for your service to our country! We are what we are because of you! Thank you!!!! If you've never read the Rainbow Bridge, here's the site: http://rainbowsbridge.com/Poem.htm

Comments = Hello, I am a stand up comedian writing a show about dogs (and celebrating our love for them)and I am currently surfing dog sites asking people to share with me their dog stories, that I may in turn share with my audience. Whilst I am mainly looking for stories that are funny, or about dogs getting up to cheeky mischief and things like that, I am also after stories that have filled your heart with love at the actions of your dog. Having just discovered this site, I am now very interested to hear stories of the bravery, courage and cleverness of dogs and so would appreciate any stories you have about your dogs, either during wartime or otherwise. You can email me at festivaldogshow@hotmail.com
Thank you.

Comments = I was apart of the 443rd Sp and 366 Sq in DaNang. I was the last handler to handle Rebel. He was put to sleep when I left. He was a great dog and served in all of Nam with greatness. I loved that dog and think of him almost daily. He save my life and was my best buddy. I knew I could trust him with everythin I had. He had 3 confirmed kills on his own. He work hard and brave. If there was anybody who was there with me please write me back, I do no remeber to many things for some reason I have erased a lot of things. I do remember Sugar Bear nick name of a black brother. Sure would like to hear from him. Also our kennel master Speed would be great to hear from him also. We killed a bull for our Lit going away party. A guy from New York did the job for us. He handled a overweight dog name Shep.
Thanks Thomas Lester Brooks SGt.

Comments = Dear fellow Patriots,
There are some untold stories of WWII in 1941 era:
Family oral history is a vital part of heritage, along with written history books. Over the past six years I have been very interested in our family history. Since the birth of my child. recalling the stories of my Great Grandmother,Great Aunt's,and mothers remembrances have truly facinated my interests with WWII. Talk about a crash course in History. Recently the family has been going on many tours to Museums. Starting with March Air Force Base. Riverside, California. The Story of: Great Grandmother Eve Nadis. I have been told that she raised Saint Bernards and donated them for OUR COUNTRY- Government Service Department PARATROOPER DOGS. She lived in Elsinore,Cailfornia. Owned a Restaurant EVE'S CAFE. The young service men would come and visit her restaurant known for the BEST Fried Chicken, Steak House, and mouth watering Biscuits- not to mention the homemade Apple Pies.
The Entertainment: Live music compliments of a Piano,ect.. Desserts,beverages and singing along with dancing was a release of tension in times felt during WWII. PLOESTI,SCHWEINFURT,ANZIO,
ST. Nazaire,Tokyo,Berlin.
Great Grandmother EVE was a Patriotic Women, A American A Calamity Jane. PLEASE HELP How to find information regarding verification in oral Family History Project. God Speed

He just looked at me and said, "buddy, I can smuggle anything out of this country EXCEPT one of those dogs" I have made contact with one of my roomates fom that time. Would love to hear from more.

War Dog Friends - My name is Joe Janesic, I am the Vice president of the Fort MacArthur Museum in San Pedro, CA. (www.ftmac.org) The museum is located at the Battery Osgood - Farley Historic Site on what was once the upper reservation of Fort MacArthur. As part of our property, we have a War Dogs Cemetery that houses the remains of about 30 dogs from WWII and Vietnam.Many years ago, and before the museum was established, people unknown to us severely vandalized the cemetery. This included the theft of more than 20 grave markers and the large bronze German Sheppard that once sat at the entrance. The museum is interested in restoring the cemetery and paying proper tribute to our nations war dogs.
My question to the group is this… Can anyone give me a suggestion for where I might be able to find a burial plot map? I have examples of grave markers that weren’t stolen, so if I had names and serial numbers, and a map of where to place them, I can recreate the missing grave markers.
Any Suggestions?…

Comments = Graduated from Lackand AFB in 1966. Fritz & I were assigned to a Nike-Herc missle site in Indiana. We had a special bond and I still miss him to this day. I always wonder what ever happened to him. I stayed in law enforcement and trained or help train many dogs. I eventually opened up a small chain of dog grooming stores in southern California.
